Zarghuna Kargar will be at the Frontline Club in conversation with Afghanistan researcher for Human Rights Watch Rachel Reid to discuss the stories of the hidden lives of women of Afghanistan that she heard while working on the popular radio show Afghan Woman���s Hour.
Listened to by millions of women and men across Afghanistan the ground-breaking BBC World Service Trust radio show included discussions stories and advice and tackled topical and controversial issues faced by women in Afghanistan every day.
As founder and presenter of the show Zarghuna Kargar was able to collect the stories of the women she came across in a soon-to-be published book Dear Zari: Hidden stories from the women of Afghanistan which include the young girl forced to grow up as a boy a childhood spent in the dark weaving carpets the widows and war amputees shunned by society and an uplifting story of a family of kite-makers.
Zarghuna Kargar will be discussing what she learnt about the women of Afghanistan and her work with Afghan Woman's Hour as well sharing her own story from growing up as a refugee in Pakistan beginning a new life in the West and struggling with her own arranged marriage
