Description

September 19, 2013 - Dr. John personifies the musical heritage of New Orleans. His era-bridging career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on great Crescent City recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex, and Frankie Ford. A notorious gun incident forced Dr. John to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano. He moved west in the 1960s and continued to be in demand as a session musician. With Gris-Gris, his 1968 debut solo album, he launched a career that adapted Louisiana tradition to modern rock & roll. He went on to earn legendary status and win six Grammys. Nick Spitzer, producer and host of public radio’s American Routes, conducts this one-on-one interview.

Presented in partnership with the Americana Music Association.
