I do that, and it really works. On the days when I don't feel very productive at all, I look back and I've actually written tons!

Don't be tempted to do the dishes, the wash, make the beds, dust, vacum, clean windows, yada, yada,yada. My wife just became a NaNoWriMoite.

Wordpadding certainly builds up the word count. My last visit to Barns & Nobles even had a section for wordpaddings that made it into print.
