They actually did discover slings, but not the kind that you throw rocks with, they invented something called a woomera, a combination of a bowl, shield, and digging tool that was also designed to hurl spears further and with more power.
Oh, and the boomerang wasnt just for stunning animals, these things could break bones, mostly the neck and skull, they were fucking legends at throwing those things. Fun fact 2: They were the first devices capable of non-self powered flight.

Also the boomerang was never meant to return since a weapon meant to break bones wouldn't be the best thing to try to catch mid-flight.
