As people may have noticed during the cutscene the Despair Embodied has two forms it switches between as it attacks, Male and Female. When female it uses a whip as a weapon and as male it uses a sword.

It occurs to me that Argosax was the first king of the underworld, and upon his defeat to Mundus/Sparda was split into different elemental beings. Either that, or since his summoning failed he rebuilt himself using the leftover matter of everything else Arius summoned.

Maybe Argosax and Mundus were brothers and constantly fought over dominion of the demon world and the different monsters between DMC1 and 2 are their own respective underlings. It would be interesting if Phantom and Griffon originally served Argosax, hence why he calls on their power here, and they only defected to Mundus when the former was destroyed and the latter regained strength and attempted his rebirth on Mallet Island. Perhaps Sparda defeated Argosax first and then destroyed his brother in order to seal the demon world away.
Could make a great game.
