I think what happened with your monies is, that since all the banks are 'linked' (You can deposit and withdraw any or all your money from any bank no matter what bank you deposited it in the first place) When the pirates raided the one town you lost ALL of your available deposited gold. :( And to top that off the temple ate all your gems/artifacts. It would be at that point I'd seriously be considering using the game disk as a frisbee.
