When I started Avid in 1987, it was clear that the only way to make a long form editor would be to dramatically compress the 640x480 image.
This video shows experiments that I funded at University of Lowell to see what these images would look like at various sizes.
We already knew we'd have to be at about 128x96 image size, based on the peformance we thought we could get from computers of that day.
Later, ULowell became our first "home." We rented space in Rich Miner's lab in November 1987, and that's where our first employee, Jeff Bedell, started his work.
