So we're up on the roof and the shingles are going down
tomorrow. Want to take the opportunity to give you a real quick
'how to shingle your roof'...

First step is to put drip edge down. Drip edge is a metal
bracket that goes around the edge of the roof line at the base of
the roof... When water runs down the roof and reaches the drip
edge, the droplets drop away from the home, instead of curling
under the edge and entering the soffit. (see picture)

Second step is laying your ice and water shield. (see picture)
Ice and water shield help protect against ice damns and leaks.

Third step is to lay your paper. This is that black material
that looks and feels like construction paper

Fourth step... laying shingles.. you start at the base and move
your way up the roof line. Double up on the first edge, and stagger
the shingles so that the tabs don't overlap creating a space for
water to enter.

Centering and staggering your shingles...
1 way - snap a line on the centre of your roof, and then snap a
line on either side, 2 inches apart. Then start laying your
shingles in the centre and move your way out. Alternating the lines
that are left and right of the centre line. This way your tabs will
never overlap.

2nd way - start at the edge of the roof line and move to the
opposite side. Start with a full shingle for your first row, then
when you start the second row you cut one of the tabs on the three
tab shingle in half. Again this makes sure your tabs do not over
lap.

5th step - Ridge Vent - lay the velcro looking material overtop
the gap at the top of your roof. Then you lay single tabs overtop,
and nail down with spacers... this way there will always be an inch
gap at the top of your roof, allowing the heat to leave your
home.
