NIB files are for Interface Builder (part of the Developer Tools located in the optional installs folder of your Leopard DVD). They're used to define the user interface of the program. It's unlikely that you'd be able to add any new functionality by manipulating them.
But you should install Developer Tools anyway, if only to get Dashcode.

in general imovie 08 doesn't even look appealing. i'll stick with imovie HD. thanks sandieman for this video!
