I think besides the brand, the most important benefits of business APIs is to outsource application innovation: as a company you can't do every application and you most likely aren't always right at guessing the killer apps. By leveraging APIs and use tracking, you can outsource this innovation, while keeping control over it. The last point is important: it's easier to negotiate a parternship or acquisition with an app that critically relies on your infrastructure. In many ways, this is essentially akin to applying decade old platform strategies to traditional businesses, which are becoming platforms.
