May 20, 2017 - “If God’s got a favorite songwriter, I think it’s John Prine,” said Country Music Hall of Fame member Kris Kristofferson, whose early 1970s discovery of Prine in a Chicago tavern helped catapult the former mailman into the national consciousness. Oh Boy Records has just released Beyond Words, a songbook featuring lyrics with guitar chords, stories, handwritten song drafts, and more than one humdred photographs from Prine’s personal collection. Prine, who in 2016 received the prestigious PEN New England’s Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award, came to the museum’s Ford Theater for a conversation with Peter Cooper about songs and songwriting. The event provided a rare window into the process and personality of a writer who became a favorite of luminaries including Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Jason Isbell, Stephen King, and Roger Waters.
