Ok...so this movie is all about interpeting it for yourself...however I did have a specifc reasoning behind some of the imagery...if you notice the main character is sitting on top of a body on the beach...it's his own dead body. He is being forced to enter into his deceased mind via the ear in an endless cycle...he realizes this at the end. The beach represents eternity...hope that helped : )
