Update: This was a scheduled hazard reduction. No homes were in danger.
I don't have any facts about the result of the fire, but I believe it's due to a hazard reduction that got out of control. Helicopters are dropping water and the NSW Bushfire Bridge are tackling it as best they can.

I didn't get out of control. I was informed by @AnthonyClarkAU that all the hazard reductions went according to plan. Giddy! :)
