III greet you with the spirit of brotherhood and unity that is given to all who are of the household of faith. For some time now, we have been intrigued by the Civil Rights era, particularly the “Montgomery Bus Boycott,” the “Integration of the University of Old Miss,” and the “Central High School in Little Rock Arkansas.” Most of the struggles faced during the days of civil reconstruction have been forgotten and the present generation has no memory or immediate history of those events. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was extremely revealing. The civil fight against the discrimination of the affluent community against the minority population by demanding they ride in the back of the bus was very eye opening.
The affluent actually became enraged when the minority population refused to use the public transportation which was one of the most prevalent vehicles of discrimination in Montgomery, Alabama at that time. Today we should recognize that the vehicles of the affluent have changed exteriors and are alive and well living under the assumed name of “Economics.” The present-day Economic Discriminating Vehicles have produced increased loss of jobs, no cost-of-living raises, mounting debt, no personal savings, no health care, high cost-of-living expenses and lack of money management skills.
This present-day discrimination crossed the color barrier and has greatly challenged individuals, families and the wider communities’ ability to not only financially support themselves but has also created a decreased environment of financial support of the church community. Our passive obedience to a system that was neither designed by the people…nor for the people…has sapped our economic strength and compromised our economic future.
We have been participating without educating ourselves while the majority pushes us back to the
