May 3, 2014 - Crystal Gayle’s warm, silky alto—as heard on her signature hit “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”—gave her an identifiable sound that was more polished than many of the female country stars who preceded her. Gayle’s ankle-length hair and sophisticated sense of fashion helped establish her as part of a new generation of country music stars at a time when country was leaving behind some of its rural traits. She enjoyed eighteen #1 hits between 1977 and 1987, including “Talking in Your Sleep,” “It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye,” and “You and I,” a duet with Eddie Rabbitt. For the last twenty years, Gayle has gained attention for various specialty recordings, including albums of gospel and children’s music and a tribute to Hoagy Carmichael. Gayle discusses her life and career and performs songs from her extensive repertoire.
The program is presented in support of the museum’s exhibition Crystal Gayle: When I Dream.
