GDC08: XNA Community Unveiled, XNA for Zune (back)

At the Game Developers Conference yesterday, Microsoft unveiled it's plans to extend the XNA program well beyond what we've seen in the past.

For the first time since the program's inception, players will be able to take part in playing XNA-based games without having to subscribe to Micrsoft's creators program, nor will they be required to download source code and compile it to test it. Much like Demos are currently downloaded on Live, XNA Community Games will be downloaded and played right from the console.

MS also announced that Zune will be getting an XNA virtual machine, though it was unclear whether games will work "out of the box" on the Zune or require target compiling for that platform.

This is a huge leap forward for the XNA program, and should definitely bring a lot more attention to the great indie programming platform Microsoft has created for the 360.
