So... I've seen Matt Brett, James Mathias, and a few others pick up Playstation 3s recently. I really, really dont' see why someone would buy one (other than being able to do Blue-Ray). Can anyone chime in on this?

Yeah, I'm with you there. Unless you're really into your home theater and absolutely must have Blu-Ray, I just don't see any reason. Virtually all the titles that were initially announced as exclusives are now being released on the 360 as well; even Metal Gear Solid 4 - the big-big exclusive that Sony imagined would be the PS3's killer app - appears to be planning a 360 release, with a Wii version a possibility. Lair, which was just released the other week, is the only game I know of that looked mildly interesting and stuck to it's exclusivity (so far.)

As an aspiring game designer myself, the reason for the lack of development is obvious: Sony requires companies to invest a huge sum of cash into their game development tools (as most console companies sadly do), and then require companies to publish their games through them- there are no third party publishers (its been that way since the PS2.) On top of this, the PS3 has yet another new graphics rendering platform which dwarfs even the legendary difficulty of the PS2's. You're really at Sony's mercy if you're making at game for their systems, and the crappy sales doesn't really build confidence with the gaming industry.

Of course, the same was said for the PlayStation 2 at launch, and we all know how that turned out. I don't know, even with the price drop there just doesn't seem like there's any games out or on the way that make it an interesting console. The 360 seems like a much better buy at this point.

For me it was a matter of wanting the system and already owning the other next gens.

I got a 360 a while back, love it (save for the red circle of death issues), got a wii shortly after launch, love it. And now I own a PS3 that I love as well.

I'm a gamer, always have been, always will be. I've owned every system since Atari 2600 with the single exception of the PSP (DS rules my handheld universe, thank you) and I always will until games stop being produced.

Ratchet and Clank Future, is enough to get me to buy the PS3, so it was a no brainer and the price drop made owning it a easy decision especially considering it's also a high-end Sony blu-ray DVD player straight out of the box, which is a nice addition to this DVDphiles life and theater.

My wife continues to tell me that I'll be picking up an Xbox 360 when Halo 3 comes out, but after playing the Beta I am not sure that it will be enough to get me to bite.
