Video Encoding (by bjtitus)

What format/quality would you recommend for uploading video with the best quality?

One of the best I've put up so far is using h.264 at Medium Quality optimized for streaming. (Don't know the exact manual specs it used).

I have tried using the flv format and it works best for me at 540x360 (16:9). Just put everything 700kbps bitrate and leave audio default. The only thing that rivals this is the wmv format. However the wmv format is more than 2.5 times as big as the flv format. So overall FLV is faster, both rendering, uploading and file size.

bjtitus:

1) Open the .DV in QuickTime Pro.

2) Choose Export from the File menu.

3) From the Export: dropdown, choose ?Movie to Quicktime Movie? and then click the Options button

4) Make sure Video, Sound and Prepare for Internet Streaming are all checked and Internet Streaming should be set to Fast Start.

5) Back up in the Video area, Click on Settings?
Compression Type = H.264
Frame Rate = 24 fps
Key Frames = Every 24 frames
Frame Reordering = checked
Quality = High
Encoding = Best Quality (Multi-pass)
Date Rate = Restrict to 768 kbits/sec
Optimized for = Download
Click OK

6) Still in video area, click Size?
Choose a size or select Custom and enter a 4×3 ration. We use 480×360 for Beach Walks
Interlace Source Video = checked (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
Click OK

7) In the Sound box, click Settings?
Format = AAC
Channels = Mono (unless stereo is important and you recorded with more than one mic
Rate = 44.1 (very important so your audio doesn?t sound like chipmunks on some video sharing sites)
Quality = Best
Bit Rate Format: Variable
Target Bit Rate: 64 (don?t need it higher for non HD video)
Precedence = Bit Rate
Click OK

That will result in very decent quality video that will play if transferred to a CD, stream wonderfully over the Web, and should encode well on video sharing sites if they have decent FLV conversion for Flash encoding.

At a format size of 480×360 this will end up being about 6MB per minute of video. We?ve tried lower Data Rates but start getting artifacts below the 768 kbits/sec.

Thanks cdevroe

I'll try this out of Final Cut Pro and see how it looks. I had problems with interlacing in the past so I hope that check box will fix it.

Any idea how to get a better quality video using WMV? It's a little grainy when I uploaded it. Thanks!!

cdevroe

cdevroe staff (2 years ago)

rempshaker: Typically WMV encodes very well on our system... just be sure that the size of the video is accurate. I have seen many videos uploaded to Viddler in the WMV format that have been very small... because we allow 500Mb file uploads, don't be afraid to upload larger resolutions!

If you need any additional assistance, let me know.

Thanks so much guys! I'll be using this info in a couple of days.

Awesome, now I can get the best quality per bandwidth by encoding it perfectly. :)

I've been using so many video sharing services in the past and the good feature sets have always been fragmented across different services (e.g. YouTube for community, Google Video for long videos, Revver for good resolution). Viddler has put it all together and has allowed for direct frame links, in-video tagging / commenting (like captioning in a way) and so on. In a way, the community exists within the video, instead of viewers being external to it. For someone who dabbles in videoblogging a lot, this is god-sent! Keep up the awesome work.

Whats a good way to export from Adobe Premiere Pro? Its got the apple export options, but it takes forever compared to exporting a windows media file.

Ok, well for Adobe Premiere, I used the same settings as above. I can post a screen shot of my export window if some one needs to see it.

I use WMV export in Adobe Premiere Elements. 560x360 with double pass encoding... I also put on anti-flicker for de-interlacing and do single-pass encoding to save time.

I also keep the bitrate at around 800kbps.

What WMV settings do you use?

The quicktime settings I was on didn't get me the audio that I wanted.

In Adobe Premiere Elements btw.

Yeah large files, but it takes hours to encode.....
WMV screencast looked very blurry.

I'd be VERY happy if my uploaded videos are like what cdevroe posted above. But you mentioned imovie, is that for MAC only?

I am on Windows, how can I achieve same quality video to upload? Do I need to get Quicktime Pro for Windows?

Please share your Windows work flow for the best video quality viewed in Viddler.

Thanks!

"Interlace Source Video = checked (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)"

I do not see "Interlace", but I see "DeInterlace Source Video". Should this be checked or not?

brandice

brandice staff (1 year ago)

I leave it unchecked, peng. I believe that's the same as interlaced, by not choosing to deinterlace.

Quicktime Pro can be acquired at the Apple website.

Great ! I tried some settings already exporting with QT pro but next time I will follow up the staff's advise in settings on the MOV format.

Colin,

Any suggestions for 16:9 aspect ratio? I used the qt settings you recommended, with 16:9 ntsc selected, and the video displays correctly on the local pc, but after it's uploaded to viddler it displays as 4:3 aspect ratio.

brandice

brandice staff (1 year ago)

helpmybusiness, you can resize the player when you embed it to accomodate the 16:9 aspect ratio, under the custom settings if you click "embed this" under the player on Viddler.

Hi Brandice I have a video in 16:9 and the viddler put it in 4:3. I was trying to do what yousay above and I can't fix it. thank you

When you exported it, did you have it set to export at 16:9 or 4:3?

Are there any plans to allow h264 MP4s to be uploaded directly without re-encoding in the same way that you currently allow FLVs? Even when doing my own encoding I still find that the VP6 codec looks poor compared to the same results you can get by using h264 at the same bitrate.

I think it's the last piece in the puzzle in making Viddler the best movie-sharing site on the web.

nickmoyer

nickmoyer staff (1 year ago)

As of right now, I'm not sure if we are going to do that for MP4s, but I will bring it up to the team.

Thanks,

I'm new here and am just curious if it's normal to have the encoding process take so long? It's been encoding for about 3 hours now? I have a pretty fast connection and my video is 54MB...

nickmoyer

nickmoyer staff (1 year ago)

Has it finished encoding now? It could have just been because it was during a very high traffic time on viddler.

as cdevroe stated above for optimum settings coming from .dv, which i am not starting with. i am starting with a qt pro 7 file.
i tried export and export to web from qt pro vid to see if my settings were similar. using neither option gets many any where near the number of settings he suggests. i have uploaded "export options" that has three screen shots of what my choices are

hmmm i swear there are screen shots in the above vid

Encoding is explained at this website - http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/V/video_encoding.html
Yes, it is necessary in order to keep things organized and running smoothly on our end.
Batch uploading is when you can upload more than one video at a time. Simple upload means you can upload one file at a time.
