Welcome to 2009 Viddlers!

Over the next week or so we're going to be planning out our next steps for 2009. We've got a huge list of things that we're continuing to work on, but we'd love to know what you'd like to see from Viddler in 2009.

If you could choose one or two things you'd like to see added or changed about Viddler in 2009... what would they be? Thanks in advance!

Firstly, i would like to give all my best wishes for Viddler Team for this new year 2009.

My wishes for Viddler 2009 are the new functionalities below :

- Player Viddler : Possibility to add or remove some menu buttons of the player's toolbar with flashvars. It means that people could add or remove by flashvars (in embed code) the embed video buttons for example and so on.

- Automatic Interaction between API Viddler Auth and Player 2 viddler Aut : When using the API to authenticate a user, the player must be authenticated automaticaly without relogin inside the player for leaving new tags or comments.

- HD on/off on the player : HD button on the player's toolbar to inform users that they watch a HD Videos or HQ videos.

- Marketing - Revenue : Possibility to choose some Addnetwork providers from the "Revenue option".

How about a Joomla plug in? The really good AllVideo extension (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/812/details) has just about every video sharing site except my favorite one - Viddler. Happy new year by the way!

Just want to punch in and say that this is great feedback. Super big thanks for everyone that is contributing. Best community ever.

iTunes support would be greatly appreciated. We currently have to upload to a separate site for that ability, and would much rather use Viddler for everything.

Just a little one:
It would be nice to have a count of the comments in the overview under 'Your videos'. Then you don't have to visit each video separately to check it out.

I'd like to echo the thought of HD option in the player. It would make life easier. I also agree with mariokluser on the idea of having the amount of comments listed. Another thing to save time. Also Wheeeponies :).

I would like to view my videos on mobile phones like Iphone and other mobile device web browsers.

The feature I would like to see would have to be a playlist. It is one of the only cons I can see so far of using Viddler instead of YouTube.

I agree with jcross in that some ponies would be great. =P

Sortable statistics for our personal videos. I'd like to see which videos are viewed the most in order.

I've mentioned a few of these many times before, but here goes:

1) iPhone/mobile integration. ;)
2) Being able to view recent comments Flickr-style. Java is KILLING me; not being able to do something like the following: http://viddler.com/djsteen/recent-comments/page4
3) Same as above but with viddler.com/djsteen/videos, recently uploaded, most popular, etc; clicking to page 30 and then hitting the back button on my browser and having to go through them again is a pain.
4) Transcoding to multiple file formats (.mov, .mp4, .m4v, .mwv, .avi, .divx).
5) Showing who tags someone's video. Just like how Flickr does it.
6) Amazing statistics page. Again, like Flickr has for pro users.
7) Keeping friend requests in the same order. (Currently, every time I load the friend request page they appear in a different order and I don't know who added me more recently.) Also having less clicks to accept someone. Suggestion: Like the Facebook friend request page.
8) Similarly mentioned in 2), if I click several pages deep on the forums, click a post, and then click back on the browser, it takes me back to page 1 of that particular forum category. URL pagination is needed SO BAD!
9) Larger HD videos; the ability to play the raw HD file in the window where the Flash player usually is (like Blip.tv can do).
10) Replace video function. Like the replace photo function on Flickr. This would have to ONLY replace the video; tags and comment (both timed and not timed) should stay. IF the new video is longer in time than the original, Viddler should display a message stating that and have options: 'Okay', 'Cancel', 'Okay, but remove the tag/comments from the timeline (because they will no longer be in sync with the video)'. If there are tags and comments on the timeline, Viddler should turn them in to regular comments and tags.

Um, how about a better system for sharing videos? When I get a message saying someone's shared a video with me, I think I should at least be told the title of the video, and the description right within the message.

I'm more inclined to watch it that way! :)

The only two things I'm looking for, aside from the age-gate thing, which I already inquired about personally (can't wait to see that in action), are the ability to search within your own videos and an explanation of the difference between views and embeds.

Please, oh PLEASE give us a playlist feature that will allow us to create a player with an easily managed playlist so I can add specific videos in whatever order I choose. There are a lot of little issues that are driving me crazy, but trying to manage video players with tags and re-uploading files to adjust the order is maddening! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add this!

I would also like to upload different player logos for different players. I use my viddler account to support multiple types of content and it would be nice to be able to brand each player with a custom link/logo. This one has caused me some heartache recently.

On the reporting side, I'd love to better sorting features that would allow me to see which videos (by title) are being viewed most often.

Also, iPhone AND Blackberry Storm support would be great.

I'm a paying subscriber, but am still looking for a provider that can come closer to the features I came to love in Brightcove before they priced their product so only major players can afford it.

I'd like to be able to edit options from the list of my uploaded videos - like changing the sharing setting - instead of having to go into each video separately and doing it from there.

1. iTunes friendly feed.
2. HD playback.

I bet people would pay for these services too. I know I would.

Another vote for the HD uploading and playback. Vimeo and YouTube allow this, but I prefer Viddler because it's a better system for me to manage what's going on with my videos.

I haven't been around long enough to have a real answer but my fake one is, I'd like more nudity. It would also be cool if the forums were more active.

I would like to second, third, fourth AND fifth HD support, iTunes/Mobile (not just iphone) support, better spam control for the forum and ponies. And, why not, Wheeeponies too. :)

Hello gang, I own two forums, one is SMF and that other is PHPBB3 and normal embeding does not work with the way you folks code it and I have to do this manually each and everytime

That is an example of what the coding should look like. Is there anyway that in the near future we can have this other method available in the embed option feature so I don't have to code this by hand?

I hope I have made my self clear in my explination, if not please reply and I can try to clarify more.

Here are two simple ones:

1. Be able to get the embed code from the "Your Videos" Page - instead of having to go to the specific video to get it.

2. Navigation through "Your Videos" is horrible. You can't skip around easily, you can only go over a few pages at a time. I'd love to sort by most views, most embeds, by length, and various other options.

I'll put in my $.02 as well

1) I'll second, third, and fourth "HD" playback. (It's impossible to stream HD on the internet effectively because the bit rate is roughly 40MB a second so it should just be considered higher quality) To refine my wish, a video player option that houses higher quality 16:9 video.

2) Information that tells us where our videos are being embedded.

3) Randomize the URLs for our videos to prevent spammer bots. Having an organized structure for videos makes Viddler very prone to spammers.

Add a playlist feature. When viewing a series of videos, it would be much easier if a playlist for each set of videos were available.

In reply to NoobTube: I love your first two ideas! Personally, I like the structured URLs. It means I can link to a video that's still encoding because I know what the next number will be. I definitely don't like spam though.

In reply to AxelStone007: Do you mean you'd like to be able to add videos you watch to a playlist attached to your Viddler account, or being able to embed a playlist of videos? The latter is definitely possible over at vidgets.viddler.com.

@djsteen: The former, similar to YouTube playlists that allow users to organize their videos on their account. It would make watching Let's Plays/playthroughs of games alot easier.

HD video IS A MUST!

Also Ogg Theora support (uploader won't accept those ogg/ogv files) is a MUST because you can save HQ HD videos with a very small filesize and decent bit rate without a huge file LOL :D

My vote is for better documentation and spam-less forums.

I just used the player on and older machine I have.
-Better frame rates please on lower end machines. I never knew the movies could be so choppy

Sorting videos you've uploaded into folders or playlists would definately make everything look a lot less cluttered and would make browsing for videos you've uploaded much easier. Specially if you have a good deal of videos...

High Definition would rock!

1. HD video and a larger player
2. Video ratings
3. Something to show where stuff gets embedded and linked
4. Playlists (Just something to organize videos would be nice)
5. Ability to Replace Videos itself and keep everything else (Useful if uploaders notice a mistake or something and would just like to replace the old version or something)

And err... 8 videos on profile pages instead of 4? Like a 4x2 instead of the current 4x1. :x

Mine probably rates lower on the priority list than these others, but I'll suggest it anyway.

oembed support is nice, but it requires extra work for each link being processed (and for each width/height combination). For example, say my server allows people to submit links, and if they submit a link to a video on viddler, we want to show an embedded video rather than a link. Right now it seems we have to do one of these things:

a) My server requests oembed from viddler, parses the response, stores the embed code in a cache or database, and renders it for the user.
b) My server renders javascript that makes the user do the work. It makes him request oembed from viddler, parse the response, and write the embed code to the page.

Neither of these is optimal. Both create (what should be) unnecessary traffic, and (b) worsens the user experience because of delay. It's also extra work for anyone who wants to do this, and the person paying the bills might not think supporting viddler is worth the money required to pay its developers for the extra work.

If the oembed response knows how to render embed code based on the original URL, then there seems to be a one-to-one correlation between the original URL and the location of the SWF that plays that video. It should be possible, then, to support a variation of the original URL as a means of obtaining the SWF. A few ideas:

1. Upload thumbnail - current system is less than fully functional
2. Replace video, keep embed code and stats etc
3. Video Editor / Splitter - we use MS Live Meeting to record webcasts (output WMV) . We aim to keep these under 30-45 minutes but often they run over (i.e. yesterday we did 1.5 hour one - yuck). These WMVs are very difficult to work with from an accurate splitting point of view - would be great if there was some sort of web interface that allowed me to do split a Viddler movie into 2 or 3 smaller movies.
4. Full size Vidget player that also displayed formatted descriptions

Simple stuff I would love to see before I go switch from YouTube to here.
1. See the amount of subs you have.
2. See where your video was embedded.
3. An option for the user to either play HD or NQ.
4. Customizable profile like colors etc.
5. Analytics of our videos.
6. Option to switch the default home tab to "Subscriptions" and not this crowded paged of featured videos.
7. Do something with the home page. Like I said above its really crowded and just seems unnatural.
8. Create a better way to navigate the site. Maybe it would be easier to just have a "Video" tab instead "Explore" but this is just picking little stuff. :)
9. I know this is stealing YT's idea but something like the annotations but better. Like making them clickable for every link instead of just in site stuff.
10. A bigger video player. Screen casts look really tiny.
