In today's tutorial I'll walk you through part of my wedding shoot-out which I presented at the KPPA wedding shoot out a few weeks ago. What I like about this tutorial is the fact that it shows hows I work to get the shot to come together - lighting, posing, composition, tweaks and all. I love the finished image. Hit the PLAY button below to see how I put the shot together and enjoy the show.

In this tutorial - let's head to Glacier Peak at Yosemite National Park. From that wonderful vista I made several pano images simply by turning to my left and then scanning to my right keeping the center focus spot position on the horizon - no tripod, all hand held, You would think that might complicate the process for Photoshop CS4. The reality was that CS4 did a great job in the stitching process and the result was a wonderful panorama.

In the original image the boy and his dad were surrounded with other wedding guests. And even though they were out of focus, they still distracted from the moment I wanted to capture in this image. I was able to quickly improve the image in Photoshop with the Quick Selection tool. Hit the PLAY button below to see how easy it was to make this image a lot stronger than it was. originally.
By ziser

Typically if we were going to photograph our subject against the sky as I have done in this image, many photogs would just use their on-camera flash as shoot away.
Learning To See The Leading Lines

Today's video tutorial is short and sweet but offers some insights in how I like to design my images. What do I mean by that? I'm a photographer who first surveys the three dimensional space before I ask my subject to step into the scene. I'm always looking to where the "directional pointers" lead in the scene and then tend to place my subject at that point. You will see in this short tutorial how the lines in the scene, once determined, lead the viewer's eye right to the subject. It's important that we learn to see in this fashion because then we have more control over our final composition and the final impression our photograph has on the viewer. Hit the PLAY button below to see what I mean.
By ziser

OK gang, just how much expensive equipment do you need to make a portrait. You know, most photographers are three things, and the first thing is...... CHEAP! Me included ;~) Over the years, more for the challenge of it all, I was always exploring the minimal amount of equipment I needed for the job. I never thought you needed the most expensive gear just to take a picture. For me, it was never about the gear - it was always about the light. So my goal has been to find the least priced piece of gear and then see just what I could do with it. Today's tutorial demonstrates this challenge very well. Check out the images I was able to put together with only a $1 LED flashlight. Hey, you get a peek at good lighting and composition too. Hit the play button below and enjoy the show.
By ziser

Is Lightroom Faster Than Photoshop?

A few months ago I re-ran one of my very early tutorials entitled, "Rocky Mountain High". I loved the tutorial because it showed how I solve the problem we portrait photographers sometimes encounter - dark, variable backgrounds. A couple readers commented wondering if I would have used Lightroom now that's its available. Well, I decided to revisit the image and test out the hypothesis of whether Lightroom would be faster than Photoshop in this instance. You may notice that the length of the Photoshop tutorial runs a few seconds shorter, but that's because I've gotten much longer winded these days. Hit the PLAY button below and you be the judge as to which solution gives the best result. You might be surprised.
By ziser

I think you are really going to like the retouching technique I'm discussing here today. We have used our "tried and true" ways of doing retouching in Photoshop. Today's tecnique shows how we can use Lightroom 2 to achieve some wonderful results without even having to make the trip to Photoshop. Sure, we still let Photoshop do all the retouching heavy lighting for us, but many times this quick "rocket speed" trick in Lightroom 2 will "fill the bill" just find. Lightroom has some wonderful built in tools that literally let us put light on the scene exactly where we want it. We can easily control the densities and tonalities of the image transforming it dramatically to get to a beautiful finished result. In this tutorial, I'll take only a few minutes to take an image that, at first glance, appears not that great. After a few Lightroom tweaks and judicious use of Lightroom 2's new tools, you will see the image transformed into a very cool looking portrait of the groom. In this tutorial I want to walk you through a short lesson in how to find the direction of light in a natural light situation -- say, outdoors. I think this is one of the hardest things for photographer to learn. You would think it would be a easy but, I can remember years ago when my instructors were trying to teach me how to do it and, I didn't find it that easy. I'm just covering the tip of the iceberg today but I hope it gives you some insights on how to improve your natural light photography.
In this tutorial, Ill walk you through a series of images I create for the goom on the wedding day. These images are more than just quick snaps of the groom looking straight back into the camera. My goal is to make the groom look comfortable, handsome, and at ease in these shots. Hey, we always make the bride look good we need to do the same for the groom as well. I'll also want to show the groom among his surrounds in which I photograph the groom by window light, natural light outdoors, in the sanctuary of the church, and in many other types of situations. So, sit back and relax, hit the PLAY button below, and enjoy the presentation.
