This tutorial will show you how I changed a fairly average location into something quite dramatic. I really wanted to add a sense of the “dramatic” to this particular image and I thought I'd do it with color. I remember this sky not being all that exciting – you know, kind of grayish, clouds not too exciting and actually quite dull. I knew my main challenge was to really, really “pop” the sky. The final result is a combination of three elements:

1 – Lighting technique.

2 – Lightroom technique.

3 – Photoshop technique.

Combining these three resources resulted in the photograph that I thought was strikingly different than your normal wedding image. Hit the PLAY button below to see how I pulled it off. Enjoy the show!
By ziser

Typically if we were going to photograph our subject against the sky as I have done in this image, many photogs would just use their on-camera flash as shoot away.
OK gang, just how much expensive equipment do you need to make a portrait. You know, most photographers are three things, and the first thing is...... CHEAP! Me included ;~) Over the years, more for the challenge of it all, I was always exploring the minimal amount of equipment I needed for the job. I never thought you needed the most expensive gear just to take a picture. For me, it was never about the gear - it was always about the light. So my goal has been to find the least priced piece of gear and then see just what I could do with it. Today's tutorial demonstrates this challenge very well. Check out the images I was able to put together with only a $1 LED flashlight. Hey, you get a peek at good lighting and composition too. Hit the play button below and enjoy the show.
By ziser

Is Lightroom Faster Than Photoshop?

A few months ago I re-ran one of my very early tutorials entitled, "Rocky Mountain High". I loved the tutorial because it showed how I solve the problem we portrait photographers sometimes encounter - dark, variable backgrounds. A couple readers commented wondering if I would have used Lightroom now that's its available. Well, I decided to revisit the image and test out the hypothesis of whether Lightroom would be faster than Photoshop in this instance. You may notice that the length of the Photoshop tutorial runs a few seconds shorter, but that's because I've gotten much longer winded these days. Hit the PLAY button below and you be the judge as to which solution gives the best result. You might be surprised.
By ziser

Lightroom has some wonderful built in tools that literally let us put light on the scene exactly where we want it. We can easily control the densities and tonalities of the image transforming it dramatically to get to a beautiful finished result. In this tutorial, I'll take only a few minutes to take an image that, at first glance, appears not that great. After a few Lightroom tweaks and judicious use of Lightroom 2's new tools, you will see the image transformed into a very cool looking portrait of the groom. Hit the PLAY button below and enjoy the show...

In this tutorial I want to walk you through a short lesson in how to find the direction of light in a natural light situation -- say, outdoors. I think this is one of the hardest things for photographer to learn. You would think it would be a easy but, I can remember years ago when my instructors were trying to teach me how to do it and, I didn't find it that easy. I'm just covering the tip of the iceberg today but I hope it gives you some insights on how to improve your natural light photography. Anyway, it's the PLAY button below and enjoy the show.
By ziser
