Back in the film days, we used an array of filters to change and vary the tonalities of the scene in our B&W photography. We would make all the necessary final tweaks in the darkroom when printing the final image.

The master of B&W image was, of course, Ansel Adams. I wonder, if Ansel was still around today, if he would be shooting digitally. I think so - getting to the finished result with software tools like Lightroom and Photoshop make it not only a breeze to get to a great result. but for me, it even more fun that the film days. Let me show you what I'm talking about. Hit The PLAY button below and let me walk you through my digital darkroom and we'll have some fun too.
By ziser

This tutorial will show you how I changed a fairly average location into something quite dramatic. I really wanted to add a sense of the “dramatic” to this particular image and I thought I'd do it with color. I remember this sky not being all that exciting – you know, kind of grayish, clouds not too exciting and actually quite dull. I knew my main challenge was to really, really “pop” the sky. The final result is a combination of three elements:

1 – Lighting technique.

2 – Lightroom technique.

3 – Photoshop technique.

Combining these three resources resulted in the photograph that I thought was strikingly different than your normal wedding image. Hit the PLAY button below to see how I pulled it off. Enjoy the show!
By ziser

Is Lightroom Faster Than Photoshop?

A few months ago I re-ran one of my very early tutorials entitled, "Rocky Mountain High". I loved the tutorial because it showed how I solve the problem we portrait photographers sometimes encounter - dark, variable backgrounds. A couple readers commented wondering if I would have used Lightroom now that's its available. Well, I decided to revisit the image and test out the hypothesis of whether Lightroom would be faster than Photoshop in this instance. You may notice that the length of the Photoshop tutorial runs a few seconds shorter, but that's because I've gotten much longer winded these days. Hit the PLAY button below and you be the judge as to which solution gives the best result. You might be surprised.
By ziser

I think you are really going to like the retouching technique I'm discussing here today. We have used our "tried and true" ways of doing retouching in Photoshop. Today's tecnique shows how we can use Lightroom 2 to achieve some wonderful results without even having to make the trip to Photoshop. Sure, we still let Photoshop do all the retouching heavy lighting for us, but many times this quick "rocket speed" trick in Lightroom 2 will "fill the bill" just find. Today I want to offer a creative way to use Lightroom 2 to enhance your images. We all seen the Photoshop techniques for showing how to highlight a certain color in a B&W image.
You know, I've been hearing this question come up as we explore the many software solutions out there. People are asking, Why do I need NIK Viveza when Ive got the Lightroom 2 Adjustment tool. Cant we simply add more or less density and saturation as easily within Lightroom 2?

In this tutorial I'll discuss the features of both pieces of software, demonstrating the benefits and the shortcomings of each solution. But keep in mind, it may be the combination of both of these solutions that gives us the best result. Let's take a peek.

What do we do if that image is badly underexposed and it really needs to be in the wedding album? Can we save it? What are the noise issues involved. If there is a tremendous amount of noise, what can we do to ameliorate it? These are the questions answered in this tutorial as I walk you through one very underexposed image. I'll show you the JPEG and RAW strategies involved, each representing a different processing challenge to get to that decent result. This all sounds very simple, but I think you will be surprised by the results and how I got there. Hit the PLAY button below to see the rest of the story.
