Introduction to Microformats

Microformats are simple, open design patterns based on existing standards — HTML — that are used to add semantics to common web content, such as that about people, places, events and links.

More than semantic meaning, though, microformats have a wide range of benefits, including SEO, standards compliance and extensible data publishing. Some of the biggest sites on the Web today use microformats: Google, Yahoo!, Twitter and Facebook, to name a few. And you can too!

In this presentation, you will learn the basics you need to start publishing microformats on your own web site. Local microformats expert and Webuquerque co-manager, Emily Lewis, will discuss the history and basic premise of microformats, and will show examples of common microformats. She will also demonstrate some of the tools available that leverage microformats for machine data.
By webuquerque

Podcasting and vodcasting, the online syndication of audio and video (respectively), are becoming popular web trends. In our September presentation, audio/video producer Vince Ascoli, will examine the full cycle of podcasting and vodcasting:

   1. Conception
   2. Production
   3. Encoding
   4. Distribution

Vincent will also demonstrate several examples of pod- and vodcasts, what people are doing with them and how they can be made to work for you and your clients.
By webuquerque

There are many new tools out there to help you create your killer web application quickly and easily. This month, local developer Mark Casias will review a few of those tools and discuss the pros and cons of using them.

After that bring your favorite argument and best chip on your shoulder as he pits the various tools against each other:

    * Javascript Libraries: jQuery vs. Prototype
    * CMS: Drupal vs. Wordpress
    * PHP Frameworks: Codeigniter vs. CakePHP vs. Zend (cage match)
    * Possible guest battle featuring Plone

Adobe's Dreamweaver CS4 is a powerful WYSIWYG editor for developing and designing web sites. But it is important to know how to best utilize Dreamweaver so that your sites are standards-compliant and accessible.

Join Virginia DeBolt and Emily Lewis as they discuss the principles of web standards and accessibility, and demonstrate how to use Dreamweaver to achieve both. You will learn:

    * About Dreamweaver's CSS-based templates, which have been tested across all major browsers
    * About Device Central for testing and previewing your sites in moble browsers
    * How to create accessible forms
    * About the importance of semantic markup and how to overwrite generated markup that isn't semantic
    * How to use the CSS panel for custom CSS rules
    * What Dreamweaver preferences you can set to support accessibility
    * How to validate your markup and CSS for different platforms

Over the last few years it seems that the various flavors of agile have taken a greater foothold as the development process de jour. And in many cases for good reason.

As an interaction designer Kevin Silver has been asked more and more on how to integrate this role into the agile process: How does the upfront design work fit in? If it does at all?

In this presentation Kevin will answer these questions. Also, based on his discussions with various companies, he will suggest how design can help overcome a few perceived deficiencies with agile so you can stay on schedule and on budget.

Presentation to be followed by socializing at Uptown for those folks who want to stick around.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kevin Silver is an empathetic champion of the end user and has been involved in designing the behavior of digital products since 1995. He has worked on a diverse range of projects for the government, software companies and many nationally recognized brands providing strategic direction and interaction design goodness.

As a passionate advocate for Interaction Design, Kevin has led the charge in forming IxDA New Mexico.

Kevin is also a board member of the IxDA. His role as an IxDA Director includes overseeing more than 70 local IxDA local groups from around the world to help enable face to face meet-ups to further advance the discipline of interaction design.

Kevin is currently the Principal Interaction Designer at Tayu Design.
By webuquerque
