Internet video is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds. While this growth has provided advertisers with many opportunities, it has also raised the bar for the level of quality and engagement that advertisers must reach with video. In an interview with WebProNews, AJ Vernet of the Digital Broadcasting Group talks about current trends and misconceptions regarding advertisers and online video.

While advertisers realize the need for customized and engaging content, they do not always understand that their video may not go viral. Vernet said a viral video is “a real moment happening.” Although competing with viral cat videos is difficult, advertisers can succeed by using creativity to create good online content.
By webpronews

Yahoo's David Roth on Paid Search and Branding

Near the end of September, Yahoo began a new branding campaign in an effort to re-shape the Internet giant’s image. WebProNews caught up with David Roth, the Director of Search Marketing at Yahoo, to talk about the re-brand and specifically, the paid search element of it.

Roth said the purpose of the new campaign was to re-engage users with Yahoo. The campaign put a new face on Yahoo and gave it a new slogan: “It’s You!” The tagline’s intention is to put a focus on users and show that Yahoo has something for everyone.

Since Yahoo is trying to re-engage its users, Roth saw the need to incorporate paid search techniques. Although people talk constantly about true value lying in branding and awareness, any time a person pays for something, he wants to know what he gets in return. As a result, Roth and his team had to essentially create a set of metrics to measure engagement in the context of their campaigns.
By webpronews

Are you utilizing search and social media together? According to Lee Odden, CEO of TopRank Online Marketing, many people keep their search and social campaigns separate. However, if they combine their efforts, they would be more capable of reaching their goals and even expanding them.

Typically, people use social media for branding and customer engagement. With search, people want to increase sales and leads by being more visible. But a joint effort produces better results. Take, for example, the Wal-Mart Check Out blog. It has 16,000 inbound links and is great for engagement, but it has a severe lack of SEO. The site ranks for phrases such as “checkout” but not for any of its content.
By webpronews

How Local Search Is Being Redefined

According to Darrin Clement, the CEO and Founder of Maponics, local search is, in fact, being redefined by the Web and mobile. The good news for users is that it is giving them more control to dictate what they want from local.

As Clement explains to WebProNews, local search is not just about latitude and longitude. The context of the search also needs to be included into the equation. Some people may be searching from their mobile devices and want real-time results, while others may be performing local searches for the next day.
By webpronews

Mark Joyner has two new books that offer very practical advice for businesses. Joyner, who is also the founder of ConstructZero, talked with WebProNews at BlogWorld and highlighted each of his new books.

The first is called Integration Marketing: How Small Businesses Become Big Businesses – and Big Businesses Become Empires. Joyner said he researched businesses throughout history and found that they all utilized forms of marketing that were both low cost and high return. In his book, he tells businesses how to find those areas of opportunity that will allow their business to take off.

Secondly, Joyner co-authored The Worst-Case Scenario Business Survival Guide with David Borgenicht. This book is a serious spin-off from the humorous book Borgenicht also co-authored entitled, The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook. Joyner and Borgenicht’s book offers advice for how businesses can approach unfortunate issues such as the recession, layoffs, loss of funding, and numerous other potential disasters.
By webpronews

There are certain myths associated with local search that many businesses unfortunately, get wrapped up in. Bruce Clay, the President and CEO of Bruce Clay, Inc., talks with WebProNews and explains why these theories are false.

First of all, small businesses do not always realize that they are competing with businesses with large budgets. Small businesses naturally have small budgets, but they need to provide the same level of optimization as their competition in order to adequately compete.

Secondly, small businesses think that they only need to do local search optimization. Clay points out that, just because a business is small and local, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t need to fix its entire website. He says:

“No matter what, the work is pretty much the same. No matter how you want to cut it, SEO is SEO.”
By webpronews

Former Googler Vanessa Fox has written a book entitled Marketing in the Age of Google. The current founder of Nine By Blue spoke with WebProNews about how her book emphasizes the importance of search.

Although it is not a technical SEO book, it does contain high-level strategies for incorporating search into the overall business process.
Google's Frederick Vallaeys Talks Changes in Online Advertising

It has been an exciting year for Google AdWords with the release of its new interface and several new tools, but it looks to get even more interesting over the next year. Frederick Vallaeys, the Senior Product Specialist for AdWords, talked with WebProNews and explained how the online advertising arena is and will continue to evolve.

Ads have traditionally consisted of three lines of text, but Vallaeys indicated that they would soon be changing. Google advertising has to keep up with the company’s organic side and integrate platforms such as universal search, images, video, and more, into ads.

He said, “We really can’t have the advertising product lag behind and not be as visually appealing, if you will, and as a result, maybe have advertisers not get as many clicks as they could’ve.”

Vallaeys also predicted changes to come in regards to advertising for mobile devices. In the past, the ad text had to be shorter for mobile devices, but as mobile technology has developed and advanced, the text can now simply be enabled to fit. In addition, ads can be specifically targeted and relevant for mobile needs.
By webpronews

At PubCon in Las Vegas, Matt Cutts updates us on some recent developments at Google. He talks a bit about the impending arrival of the 'Caffeine' upgrade and touches on a new emphasis on site speed as a ranking factor. From the sound of it, speed is going to be a huge factor in SEO moving in to 2010.

A number of people within Google consider speed to be very important to the web, as such we will likely see load speed take on increasing importance as a ranking factor.

According to Cutts, speed hasn’t played a role in rankings in the past but apparently they will in the future. Watch the video for more details about Caffeine and Google’s resources for helping webmasters improve site speed.
By webpronews

Facebook and Twitter may be getting all of the attention, but blogs aren’t going anywhere. At the 2009 BlogWorld Expo, Blogger Product Manager Rick Klau talked to WebProNews about the state of Google’s blog publishing system, the state of blogging in general and how newer communications options come into the equation.

Klau said that Twitter and blogs “each have their place,” blogging and microblogging aren’t part of a zero-sum game. If conversations are fragmented, that’s fine. That can even be a good thing. Twitter became the second-largest source of traffic (after Google) to Klau’s blog when he implemented software that tweeted about his latest posts.
By webpronews

A hot topic at recent industry events has been the question of big brands and how they can use social media. Ford Motor Company is one brand, however, that has not let that question become an obstacle.

WebProNews spoke with Scott Monty, the Head of Social Media at Ford, who explained how the company first became involved with social media just a few years ago. Their efforts began as a hobby, but he helped them develop an approach to incorporate social into their overall business strategy.
By webpronews

The days of time constraints and censorship are over, thanks to the Internet. The Web opens many new opportunities that would not be possible in traditional media. Popular actor/comedian Kevin Pollak has made a name for himself in traditional media and is now embracing the Web. While he is not abandoning traditional media, he is taking advantage of all that the Web offers.

The actor has an online talk show called Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show. The set is simple and consists of a black background and round wooden table, similar to a Charlie Rose set. Unlike other talk shows offline, Pollak’s show has no time limitations or censorship. The typical running time is one hour, but if it continues for two hours or longer, no one stops it.
By webpronews

Steve Rubel on Blogging in a Micro Blog World

Move over Blogs, Micro Blogs are the 'new thing'. So where does that leave the bloggers? More and more it is becoming a reality - for better or worse, people just don't have time to read a 500 word blog post anymore. This trend can be partially (or almost completely) credited to the extreme popularity of social networking and microblogging.

Nielsen Online found that the average American visits 111 domains and 2,554 web pages each month. Based upon those statistics, it is very important that content publishers have visibility everywhere that people are spending time.

As a result, Rubel found a new publishing platform he believes is more efficient.
By webpronews

When Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda created the first Chad Vader film, they had no idea that it would turn into the Internet sensation that it is today. The very first episode reached over 100,000 views on YouTube the first day and has gone on to exceed 9 million views today.

The storyline is based on the younger brother of Darth Vader, Chad, who is a grocery store manager. Yonda plays the role of Chad Vader, while Sloan provides the voice.

The Chad Vader phenomenon has now turned into a series with a finished season 1 and a nearly completed season 2. Both Yonda and Sloan have been able to quit their day jobs and devote all their time to Chad Vader. The two are very appreciative of the opportunities the Web has offered them.
By webpronews

Jenny Lawson, “The Bloggess” began writing a mommy blog for the Houston Chronicle, but quickly found that it wasn’t enough.

To truly fulfill her desires, she created a blog where she could write about whatever she wanted: ninjas, sex, zombies, William Shatner, - just - whatever. She also developed a satirical sex and advice columns.

Because some people consider her content controversial, Lawson has received her fair share of hate mail. She told WebProNews she turns it into something positive: free entertainment.

For example, people have told her “your retarded,” but in all actuality, the joke is on them since they misspelled “you’re.” She said:

“If you’re not entertained by your own blog and both the people that love you and the people that hate you, then I think you’re missing out.”
By webpronews

According to Sasi Parthasarathy of Bing, security is extremely undervalued, especially, since it could make or break a business’s credibility on the Web.

Bing sees blogs, forums, and social media/user generated content as the most problematic areas online. Parthasarathy says these areas have to be monitored closely. To secure your site, he suggests:

1. Keeping all software up-to-date
2. Maintaining strong passwords
3. Checking plugins

He also recommends scanning your site with anti-malware tools or Spyware to further secure it.
By webpronews

What happens if your onsite analytics look good, but you still aren’t drawing conversions? Bryan Eisenberg of FutureNow encountered that very situation when he was approached with a site that sells kayaks. He found that the problem was not with the individual pages on the site, but instead, with the actual process leading up to the conversion.
By webpronews

Twitter is reportedly releasing commercial accounts later this year. The accounts will be paid accounts specifically for businesses and will include statistics and analytics that are not currently offered.

The microblogging service has yet to make money, but will this new business product ultimately provide the monetization model that the company so desperately needs? Although details of the pending product are scarce, early speculation reveals concern.
By webpronews

One area where Bing has attempted to differentiate itself from other search engines is in mobile search. Justin Jed, Group Product Manager for Bing Mobile Search, believes in their product because it focuses on what users want. Not only does Bing organize Web results, but it also customizes them to better meet user needs.
By webpronews
