Dollar General, Rue21 today. Toys 'R' Us next?

Toys "R" Us Inc. may be one of the next private equity-backed retailers to sport an initial public offering, says retail consultant Howard Davidowitz, founder of Davidowitz & Associates. The toy store chain would follow on the heels of successful public debuts Friday of discount retailer Dollar General Corp. (NYSE:DG), backed by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., and teen apparel retailer Rue21 Inc. (NASDAQ:RUE), backed by Apax Partners Worldwide LLP. Last month, Vitamin Shoppe Inc. (NYSE:VSI), backed by Irvingplace Capital Management LP and Blackstone Group LP (NYSE:BX), became the first U.S. retailer to go public in two years. Also in October, Dollarama Inc., backed by Bain Capital LLC, debuted on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Private equity firms in general and KKR in particular are expected to take more of their portfolio companies public soon. Gordian's Peter Kaufman on Blackstone IPOs

Blackstone Group LP (NYSE:BX) isn't the only private equity firm eying the IPO market. Fortress Investment Group LLC (NYSE:FIG) took railroad operator RailAmerica Inc. (NYSE:RA) to market on Tuesday and saw the share price drop 6% (The Deal Pipeline subscription required). A handful of other PE-backed firms have also gone public in the past three months. In this edition of Inside The Deal, Peter Kaufman, president of the investment bank Gordian Group LLC, says PE firms are looking for exits and the stock market rally has made IPOs an attractive option. Hurdles remain for Chrysler

Chrysler LLC's tentative agreement with some of its largest creditors may have helped it clear a significant hurdle in the race to avoid bankruptcy. But big obstacles remain. The automaker is reportedly close to a debt-for-equity deal in which lenders would write off a majority of Chrysler's $6.8 billion debt in exchange for a less than 10% stake. In this edition of Inside the Deal, bankruptcy attorney Sandra Mayerson says holdouts in the lender group may remain, and she's not convinced they will agree to the deal terms, which are a long way from what creditors had proposed. There's also a possibility, says Mayerson, a partner with Squires, Sanders & Dempsey LLC, that a planned partnership with Fiat SpA could collapse. Chrysler faces a Government-imposed Thursday deadline to finalize the Fiat alliance or be cutoff from further public assistance. See the video below or download it at iTunes.

Behind The Money: Greycroft's Drew Lipsher on digital media

Drew Lipsher, a partner at early-stage venture capital firm Greycroft Partners LLC, says the continued pressure on traditional media companies means opportunities for startups. "It is a great time for a lot of young companies focusing on digital media," says Lipsher in this episode of The Deal's Behind the Money show. "The biggest challenge is, How do you build a company that's a large enough scale so that it's attractive to the major media companies?" The startups that have the best opportunities fall into two categories: those that have the ability to scale in consumption, audience or revenues; and those that are building "pieces of the services side of the media business that are going to help drive the scale," says Lipsher. In the latter camp, there are opportunities for new businesses to develop advertising metrics, such as measuring brand lift and consumer engagement. Before becoming a venture capitalist, Lipsher, 42, had a long career in media, serving in executive roles at IGA, BMG Entertainment and Warner Music Group. At Greycroft, he has led the firm's investments in ImageSpan LLC, a service provider for digital content production, licensing and acquisition; MDX Medical LLC, developer of physician finder Vitals.com; and Worldwide Biggies, a digital entertainment studio founded by Albie Hecht, former president of Nickelodeon Entertainment and Spike TV.
