Aero-TV: Almost A Mustang -- Titan's T-51 (Part 2)

<p><a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/aeronewsnet/videos/252/" title="Aero-TV: Almost A Mustang -- Titan's T-51 (Part 2)" ><img src="http://cdn-thumbs.viddler.com/thumbnail_1_b6f92ce2.jpg" width="114" height="86" alt="Aero-TV: Almost A Mustang -- Titan's T-51 (Part 2)" border="0" /></a></p>

EVERYONE Loves A Mustang... Here's One That Can Be Owned/Flown -- Affordably!

With real-live P-51s pretty much ruining a million dollar bill these days, there are few of us that can aspire to ownership of such a treasure.

However; if you're willing to scale down your expectations a bit, there could be a solid Mustang replica in your future -- and a hell of a beautiful one, at that. John Williams, he of Titan Tornado fame, was one of the passionate Mustang fans that decided that the only way he was going to own the (affordable) plane of his dreams, was to build it for himself. And best of all, having created and engineered a beautifully detailed 3/4 scale version, he has made this bird available in kit form for one and all.

Titan Aircraft's T-51 is the newest addition to their highly regarded family of light aircraft. Titan Aircraft's replica P-51 combines friendly low speed handling characteristics with agility and high performance. The T-51 is rated at a +6g/-4g load limit capability at a gross weight of 1450 pounds. When operating with the 912S engine, and with the landing gear retracted, the cruise speed is 150mph. The stall speed, in landing configuration, is 39 mph.

An all-metal kit, the T-51 has an estimated build time of 1600 hours and includes all required material, components and fasteners. The kit does not, however, include the engine, propeller and instruments because of different customer preferences. When equipped with the Rotax 912S engine, controllable propeller, and a full compliment of necessary flight instruments; they expect the finished T-51 to cost well under $80,000.00. Other, more powerful, engine options are also available.

The Titan T-51 has an Empty Weight between 850-1180 pounds, a Gross Weight of 1320-1800 pounds and a Wing Span of 24'. The Cabin Width is 26", Fuel Capacity is 25 Gallons and engine selections include the Rotax 912s, 914, Jabiru 332a, or the Suzuki V6 (offering a power range of 100<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/aeronewsnet/" >aeronewsnet</a></p>

For The Guy Who Must Have EVERYTHING...

You must have heard the rumors... a VSTOL Harrier "JumpJet" in civilian hands!! Well, rumor no more, ANN and Aero-TV is proud to introduce you to Art Nalls, former USMC Fighter jock and the owner/operator of the only civilian Harrier in the world... much less on the airshow circuit.

Art Nalls is an amazing guy -- one who has given the FAA some interesting tasks... such as administering a checkride last October -- to fly the Harrier! Art says that, "The examiner required me to demonstrate the various takeoffs and landing for VSTOL aircraft, as he was totally unfamiliar with the Harrier, so we discussed the various takeoffs and landings and the appropriate use for each. The examiner was pleased with my flying and granted me the type-rating." This event made Art the first person to have (and pass!) a checkride in the World&rsquo;s only privately-owned, airworthy Harrier -- also earning a Powered-Lift endorsement to that type-rating.

That Art passed should be no surprise. His first operational aircraft was the AV-8A &ldquo;Harrier&rdquo; and he was assigned to VMA-231 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. While stationed at Cherry Point, he carrier-qualified in the AV-8A &ldquo;Harrier&rdquo; aboard the USS Iwo Jima, LPH-2, and made several shipboard deployments, virtually over the world. He has traveled above the Arctic Circle, below the equator, and made a complete global circumnavigation, reaching Beirut, Lebanon twice &ndash; once from the east and once from the west.

While on a training mission attached to VMA-231, Art&rsquo;s &ldquo;Harrier&rdquo; suffered a catastrophic engine failure near Richmond, Virginia. With little time to react, he essentially landed the Harrier engine-out at a civilian airfield. This was an extremely precise and risky landing, not normally attempted. The emergency procedures recommend an ejection. The Mitchell Bomber Turned The Tide Of A World War

Of all the stories that permeate the rich heritage of the aviation world, few are as compelling and as dramatic as that of 16 B-25 bombers who launched off a pitching carrier deck to bomb Japan on April 18th, 1942. They called it the "Doolittle Raid" and it came to be the first, pivotal, air raid to strike the Japanese on their home turf during World War II.

It was a huge symbolic victory for the American war effort, proving that Japan could be vulnerable to Allied air attack. It also provided a fitting response to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. The raid was the brainchild of LTC James "Jimmy" Doolittle, who chose the mighty B-25 to launch off the Carrier Hornet, barely half a year after Pearl.

Two and a half weeks before the attack, 16 B-25s, modified to fit their unique mission requirements, their five-man crews and support personnel were loaded aboard the Hornet to steal away across the Pacific in search of the Japanese coastline. Each machine carried specially designed 500 pound bombs and had been stripped to the bare essentials, even to the point of losing their conventional bombsights since the mission would be flown at low-level and over easily targeted locations.

The bombers carried names like the Whiskey Pete, the Green Hornet, the Ruptured Duck, Bat Out of Hell, and the like. Some 650 miles from Japan, the force launched after its premature sighting by a Japanese picket boat, in small groups, running so low over the waves that some pilots reported spray on the windshields. It took just under an hour to launch all 16 birds off a miniscule carrier deck, but together, they reached Japan, dropped their munitions (except for one that got jumped by Japanese fighters and dropped ordinance early) and headed off for the "safety" of the Chinese coast where they hoped to ditch their aircraft and evade capture by the Japanese.

Some crashed, some ba<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/aeronewsnet/" >aeronewsnet</a></p>

The raid was the brainchild of LTC James "Jimmy" Doolittle, who chose the mighty B-25 to launch off the Carrier Hornet, barely a year and a half after Pearl.

Some crashed, <p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/aeronewsnet/" >aeronewsnet</a></p>

Let's Get Up Close And Personal With A Flying Legend

Seen in a two part Aero-TV program a few weeks back, we talked about spending time with a ghost. In this case, the ghost looked a lot like a B-17... by the name of "Thunderbird."

We're back with Thunderbird one more time... this time to do a walk-around of the grand old beast, to look her over from stem to stern and teach you a few things about one of the grandest birds to grace the skies.

The B-17 Flying Fortress was an Army Air Corps heavy-duty bomber from World War II. These four-engine aircraft flew strategic bombing missions over Europe armed with .50 caliber machine guns and five thousand pounds of bombs. 13,000 B-17&rsquo;s were produced over the course of the war, of which only 13 still are airworthy today. The Lone Star Flight Museum&rsquo;s B-17 is painted in the colors of &lsquo;Thunderbird&rsquo;, an aircraft with the 303rd bomb group which flew 116 missions during World War II.

The Lone Star Flight Museum tells ANN that it, a 501 (c)(3) self-supporting educational museum, began as a private aircraft collection in June 1985. The acquisition of more aircraft quickly led to a search for a new home. In 1990, construction of a 50,000 sq. ft. Phase I facility began at Galveston's Scholes Field. Continued rapid growth required construction of a 30,000 sq. ft. Phase II hangar in 1991. Along with the aircraft collection, the LSFM began to acquire and display aviation memorabilia and artifacts, develop educational programs, and recruit volunteers through a Membership Program implemented in July 1991. The LSFM receives over 35,000 of volunteer service hours each year. Many programs and participation opportunities are available for members to promote and support the LSFM mission.

The Museum's flying collection of award winning aircraft annually logs more than 40,000 cross-country air miles to participate in flying displays and air shows. For instance, the Museum's P-47 Thu<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/aeronewsnet/" >aeronewsnet</a></p>

USMC's Most Versatile Jet Takes Oshkosh By Storm

You couldn't get away from it... that roar... that blast of unconfined thrust that occurs as the US Marine Corps Harrier 'Jump Jet' spools up and takes a flight... in the most amazing ways. One of the truly all-time favorites at Oshkosh, Aero TV got the chance to speak with the pilot for this year's Harrier demonstration, Major Dave Martin, call sign: Doc.

The Harrier arrive at the fabled land of Oshkosh on July 28th, and stayed through the daily air show on Wednesday, July 30th, before heading home. It performed its ever-popular flight demonstrations during each of the EAA AirVenture air shows on July 28-30. (Note to anyone within about a 1/4-mile radius of show center at future such demonstrations: bring earplugs... or not, since the noise is part of the fun -- E-I-C).

The AV-8B Harrier II is designed for combat air support, as well as combat air patrol, missions against ground defenses and armed escort. The single-seat fighter is 46 feet long with a wingspan of 30 feet. It can reach transonic speeds and has radar systems similar to those found in F/A-18 fighter jets.

The Marines first deployed the Harrier II in 1985, with the upgraded AV-8BII Plus model introduced in 1993. The aircraft is the latest descendant of the original British Harrier jump jet that first appeared in the early 1960s. The AV-8B V/STOL strike aircraft was designed to replace the AV-8A and the A-4M light attack aircraft. The Marine Corps requirement for a V/STOL light attack force has been well documented since the late 1950's. Combining tactical mobility, responsiveness, reduced operating cost and basing flexibility, both afloat and ashore, V/STOL aircraft are particularly well-suited to the special combat and expeditionary requirements of the Marine Corps. The AV-8BII+ features the APG-65 Radar common to the F/A-18, as well as all previous systems and features common to the AV-8B Harrier II.

AirBoss Ralph Royce Chats About Airshow Safety

There are few more complex "organisms" than an airshow in full operation. The amount of detail, coordination and expertise needed to pull off the modern American airshow is beyond the abilities of any one human being... though it does rely on one to try to coordinate the aerial operations... the much respected and much feared AIR BOSS.

At an inaugural East Coast airshow in 2008, ANN and Aero-TV had the chance to see one of the best at work. Ralph Royce -- Aviation Legend, Pilot, Warbird Jock and Airshow Expert, was at work this time keeping everything safe, entertaining and ON TIME. Following the completion of the show, ANN's Editor-In-Chief Jim Campbell sat down with Royce to talk airshows, safety and how to help all involved to (according to one of Ralph's favorite sayings) "don't do nuthin' dumb."

Royce has an amazing history in the aviation world. Royce served for 15 years as President and Chief Executive Officer of the The Lone Star Flight Museum and Texas Aviation Hall of Fame, having taken on that post in 1991. His emphasis on team-building and his plans for the future were evident in the statement he gave ANN upon his departure, "I cannot thank the volunteers and staff enough, for they have helped make this organization into the world recognized collection of aircraft and aviation memorabilia that it is..." said Royce. "I have had a wonderful ride but I have been planning this for some time. There are a couple of things I want to try in the aviation and air show worlds, and now is a good time to try them."

A commercially rated pilot with extensive warbird and airshow credentials, and a descendent of two generations of aviators, Royce has been involved in some aspect of aviation his entire life. His grandfather was a career Army Air Corps officer earning Military Aviator License # 44. In 1917, he led the 1st Aero Squadron in France and became commander of all U.S. Forces in th<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/aeronewsnet/" >aeronewsnet</a></p>
