In general, a hostname is the unique name by which a device attached to the network is identified. The hostname is used to identify a particular host in various forms of network communication. In Cisco routers, the hostname attribute is locally significant. Thus, you can have many routers in the network with the same hostname . But, this is not recommended. During the PPP authentication, the routers send to each other their hostnames unless the ppp chap hostname command is issued. In Cisco routers, the default value of the hostname attribute is Router. You can change the hostname using the hostname command in the global configuration mode. Once the command is issued, the router prompt changes immediately to display the new hostname value.
