Bayou St. John Gets High Tech

Bayou St. John recently received solar powered high tech water monitoring equipment that will monitor such things as depth, temperature, oxygen, and salinity levels which when all processed together will indicate water quality. And, if that wasn't enough, the unit will eventually transmit this data to a public website. This data could be used by fishermen to know when is the best time to catch fish in Bayou St. John. The data could also be used by scientists to back up the residents requests to have the Bayou St. John sector gates open on a regular basis and only closed during extremely high tides or when a hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico.

RTA Board Meeting July 1st, 2009

The meeting began after 11:30 a.m. to a packed room. General orders of business were covered along with two major issues. The first issue was Veolia's contract with the RTA which was renewed for 5 years. Either party can discontinue the contract with 180 day notice. After 5 years the contract can be renewed for another 5 years. The goal is to develop policies that result in more sustainable urban environments that provide a high quality of life. Also covered was the addition of three new streetcar lines which will span from St. Claude down Rampart Street. I understand these new lines will be named Desire, Rampart and Loyola. This film shows the section of the meeting that relates to the streetcar issue.

2009 Fortier Park Festival

The 2009 Fortier Park Festival was the best yet. Victor Bush was the DJ and kept everyone dancing. Not only was everyone treated to stellar performances by Walter "Wolfman" Washington and the "Sleeping Giant" but Dr. John stopped by to play a few sets. 1300 Moss

From the 1938 Federal Writers' Project of the WPA for the City of New Orleans: THE HELEN PITKIN SCHERTZ HOUSE 1300 MOSS ST., often referred to as the Spanish Custom House because it was supposed to have been a storage place for contraband goods confiscated from the pirates who ran their boats up the bayou, is one of the best preserved and most attractive of the city's old plantation homes. Built about 1784, it is one of the West Indian style type of plantation dwellings, broad galleries permitting free circulation of air through the original two rooms on each floor. The first floor is of plastered brick, with Pompeian brick columns supporting the gallery; the second story with its wooden gallery and slanting roof is contructed of wood. The two dormer windows in the American Colonial style were probably added later. A narrow outer stairway leads to the second floor at one end of the gallery. A floor of slate flagging overlays the original brick flooring, and an additional room has been added along the rear of the house."
