This twelve part series explores the lives and works of some of art history's most influential artists including: Piero della Francesca, Holbein, Caravaggio, Constable and Whistler.
Shot in ten countries and in over forty churches and galleries, Tim Marlow takes us on a unique tour of the life and times of the artists and examines what makes them great.
Each episode takes a fresh look at the artists, their work and the world in which they lived. We learn why John Constable, often considered to be a painter of chocolate box scenes of the English countryside, was in fact, a radical artist of his time. We see how Goya's masterful painting style and haunting visions combined to produce some of the most powerful images in the history of Western Art.
We discover how the American painter Mary Cassatt, the only female artist in the series, challenged the male dominated world in which she lived, and against the odds, became the only American accepted into the group known as the Impressionists. And why Caravaggio, who lived a life marred by violence and even murder, produced some of the most remarkable art ever made.

"Nero's Golden House" is EXCLUSIVELY DISTRIBUTED by Microcinema DVD. To order this DVD and/or other Microcinema titles, go to: www.microcinemadvd.com.

It was once the grandest, most ostentatious building on earth. It was built by the most infamous emperor in history to satiate his many and various lusts. It was a building that played host to violence, sexual perversion and great beauty. Even the Romans found it too much and built the Colosseum on top of it.

Today a few rooms remain - and a new investigation is taking place to try and distinguish fact from fiction. It will be one of history's great detective stories - can the building help prove whether the Emperor Nero was as bad as they say - or worse? Or was he actually an inspired artist and designer unfairly maligned through the centuries? Is the 'Golden House' one of the unrecognized architectural wonders of the world?

Rome's most notorious emperor was trying to create a model of Roman domination on land and sea. There were hundreds of rooms, and thousands of frescoes and statues. Only the best was considered worthy. To cap it all, a 120-foot statue of Nero, as absolute ruler, stood at the entrance - (this was the Colossus - from which the Colosseum would later derive its name). On completing the Golden House Nero exclaimed "Good, now I can at last live like a human being".

This visually bold and exciting film examines the reality behind the myth of this extraordinary building. Moreover, the film explores just who was the real Nero - and what does his rule tell us about the rule of the Roman emperors.

Synopsis: Shantell Martin’s new DVD, KOOB’S, features a diverse collection of short videos that demonstrate the artist’s playful inventiveness with both the concept and tools of drawing, which in Martin’s case include more traditional media such as the humble marker alongside a WACOM electronic drawing tablet and packing tape. Canvases utilized range from projector screens to mock computer tennis to the human body to the outdoor landscape in its entirety.

"Hors Pistes Vol. 3" is EXCLUSIVELY DISTRIBUTED by Microcinema DVD. To order this DVD and/or other Microcinema titles, go to: www.microcinemadvd.com.

The third volume of the HORS PISTES DVD presents three films selected during the 2008 festival: 'The Music of Regret' (Laurie Simmons), 'Les hommes sans gravité' (Eléonore Weber) and 'In the Wake of a Deadad' (Andrew Kötting). Each of these films deliberately challenges our perceptions beyond that of the usual director and spectator roles. The shifting of form and subject makes HORS PISTES unique. Imagined and directed by the Pompidou Centre, with help from the French short film agency (Agence du court métrage), HORS PISTES is a cry for original creativity!

THE MUSIC OF REGRET is a musical in three parts that appropriates the genre and reaffirms its happy, fanciful aspects. The film is peopled with familiar characters from Laurie Simmons' world: ventriloquist dummies, anthropomorphic puppets and oversized everyday objects. Inspired by the work of artist Ardis Vinklers, Laurie Simmons' first film builds on her photographic work expanded into performance. She invited musicians, professional puppeteers, dancers from Alvin Ailey dance company, filmmaker Ed Lachman and the actress Meryl Street to join her for the occasion.

LES HOMMES SANS GRAVITE: Within the crumbling walls of a house in ruins two young men - a lord and a gypsy - get to know each other. Bodies and decor are filmed as echoes of one another, gracefully and languidly, as they continually threaten to to disappear into a narrative abyss, only to be saved in extremis by a volley of dialogues which are themselves nourished by the characters' own faint yet sustained curiosity for each other. Through a mise en scene between frailty and persistence, Eleanore Weber's film follows desire in motion.

IN THE WAKE OF A DEADAD: Following the death of his father, Andrew Kottling made a giant blow-up doll bearing his father's traits and film<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/Microcinema/" >Microcinema</a></p>

RE:FRAME is a selection of seven films from a contemporary cinema, removed from Bollywood, that testifies to the richness of creativity in India. Oscillating between documentary, video art, experimental film, and animation, this compilation explores the means with which the texture of memory is incorporated within post-colonial Indian society's individual journeys as well as the national psyche; within private circles as well as public spaces. It allows for contrasting points of view regarding the country's situation and its unanswered question: when the past has yet to catch up with the present, is it a threat or an alternative to the present?

DVD Extras: Interviews / Biographies / Text

Subtitles: French, English and German

All About Prints is a documentary that invites novices and experienced collectors alike to explore the art of printmaking from the perspective of influential curators, collectors, dealers, printmakers, and artists.

Shot in Hi-Def video at museum print rooms, print fairs, galleries, and print workshops in America and Europe, All About Prints explores the collaborative nature of printmaking, the democratic character of multiples, and the deep-rooted traditions of the art form. These ideas come to life through the exploration of masters of the 19th century like Homer and Whistler; the important contribution of Edward Hopper; the influence of Mexican muralists; the formative years of the Federal Art Project of the WPA; the excitement of the 60's print boom; and the ever-evolving techniques of contemporary artists such as Kiki Smith who carry on the tradition.

Starving, exhausted and stripped of their old identities, they wander desperately lured by one deceptive promise of salvation after another. Shot in brilliant Eastmancolor and featuring a star-studded cast, Death in the Garden is a pulsating adventure film, alive with Surrealist gestures, making it classic Luis Buñuel.

'Guns on Clackamas' is a peek into the film industry in the spirit of Spinal Tap.

Nigel Nado, the notable documentary filmmaker, is trying to make a movie about some people trying to make a movie. But everything is going wrong. The subject of his documentary, the western 'Guns on the Clackamas' is plagued with problems. The lead actress has a severe stutter. And since she also happens to be the Executive Producer’s mistress, there’s not much that can be done to remedy the situation. Unsuccessful in turning the movie into a yodeling extravaganza, they decide to fire the actress. This results in having her irate beau pull the plug on the film’s financing. The beginning of the end is marked by cast members dropping like flies due to any number of reasons. Bad macaroni salad. Bad chili. Bad caterer. A camera dolly runs over a crew member, severing some key limb or another. Then since no cast member has survived, and the film’s producers can’t hire replacements, the 'Guns on Clackamas' makers must resort to solutions at once startling and hilarious.

'Objectified' is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. In his second film, director Gary Hustwit ('Helvetica') documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. 'Objectified' profiles the people who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis, including designers for companies like Apple, BMW, Muji, IKEA, Vitra, and more. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves? "You'll never look at your next toothbrush (or your next any product) in quite the same way after watching this astute, elegant inquiry into the purpose and process of industrial design." – Entertainment Weekly (Grade: A)

"Art 21: Season 5" is a PBS Home Video release now available through Microcinema DVD. To order this DVD and/or other titles distributed by Microcinema, go to: www.microcinemadvd.com.

Through in-depth profiles and dynamic behind-the-scenes footage featuring artists speaking directly about their inspirations and ideas, Season Five shows a broad range of artistic practice, technical innovation, and experimentation, from artists tackling large-scale collaborative projects in hangar-like studios, to those working in the quiet of more intimate studio settings. Art21 traveled around the world in Season Five, filming the creation of new art on every continent (except Antarctica) and in museums, studios, galleries and homes in nine countries.

Fourteen internationally recognized artists, from painters and sculptors to photographers and artists exploring the possibilities of new media, were filmed in their own environments and in their own words. The result is an exceptional opportunity for audiences to experience first-hand the complex artistic processes behind some of today’s most intriguing and thought-provoking art.

<p><a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/Microcinema/videos/168/" title="In Search of Mozart" ><img src="http://cdn-thumbs.viddler.com/thumbnail_1_f936714_v1.jpg" width="114" height="86" alt="In Search of Mozart" border="0" /></a></p>

Made to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, IN SEARCH OF MOZART is the first feature-length documentary on Mozart’s life. Produced with the world’s leading orchestras and musicians, told through a 25,000 mile journey along every route Mozart followed, this detective story takes us to the heart of genius.

Without resorting to docu-drama or visual re-enactment, In Search of Mozart traces the composer’s life through his music and extensive correspondence. From K1a to K626 (Requiem), over 80 works are featured in chronological order, revealing striking parallels between the music and Mozart’s own experiences. Throughout, it is the music that takes center stage, with the jigsaw of Mozart’s life fitting around it. With rigorous analysis from musicologists and experts such as Jonathan Miller, Cliff Eisen, Nicholas Till, Bayan Northcott and the late Stanley Sadie, a new, vivid impression of the composer emerges. It dispels the many common myths about Mozart’s genius, health, relationships, death and character, to present a new image, very different from Milos Forman’s Amadeus.
