How to Build a Fictional Twitter Feed

Earlier this year Carri Bugbee won an Shorty Award for gaining over 13,700 Twitter followers for an imaginary character--writing tweets about the life of Mad Men character Peggy Olson. GalleyCat caught up with Bugbee at O'Reilly Media's Twitter Boot Camp, where experts pondered this new social networking tool. In this exclusive interview, Bugbee tells publishers how they can build Twitter campaigns for imaginary characters--including a speculative riff on a Twitter feed for a Michael Connelly character. Besides writing about the adventures of a young secretary in New York City, Bugbee works for Big Deal PR, building social media campaigns for different companies.

Artists, Writers, and the Great Depression

Until June 20th, the New York City gallery has an art show collecting a series of nudes painted by Alice Neel during the Great Depression. One GalleyCat editor put together this short video about Neel, the Work Projects Administration (WPA), and New York bohemians in the 1930s--using actual WPA footage shot during the period. NOTE: The three paintings in the video come courtesy of the Zwirner & Wirth exhibit, and feature brief images of nudity. Neel befriended numerous writers in the 1930s, including poet Kenneth Fearing and editor Malcolm Cowley, and the WPA created work for this group of artists. While Neel's official site provides an extensive biography, the book "Alice Neel: Paintings from the Thirties," edited by Wayne Koestenbaum, collects many of Neel's most gorgeous works from the Great Depression and the WPA. After the Great Depression, hundreds of works of art--from state guidebooks to precious paintings--were literally scrapped. As we struggle through our own economic crisis, many are revisiting these lost artifacts. Garrett County Press recently republished the New Orleans City Guide written by WPA-contracted writers and the Zwirner & Wirth exhibit sheds more light on the period.

Author Toni Morrison published her first novel in 1970, and her career has spanned a number of milestones for civil rights, technology, and politics. In this short video, the Nobel Prize winning novelist talks about writing in the age of President Barack Obama and the Internet. Earlier this week, GalleyCat covered the National Coalition Against Censorship's launch of the Free Speech Leadership Council. Morrison spoke at an intimate event at the book-filled apartment of Council chair and former HarperCollins CEO Jane Friedman . The new council is a collection of community leaders working together to combat censorship around the country. How 25 Million Chinese Readers Read Online

In a sparsely attended BEA panel about Chinese literature, publishing consultant Rüdiger Wischenbart and Wan Rong Books publisher Lu Jinbo discussed how Chinese publishers discovered 25 million readers online. The two speakers pondered the shifting publishing landscape, particularly how the recent report, the Chinese website Shanda Literature has 25 million readers and handles about 90 percent of China's booming online literary readership with a unique subscription model. After the panel, GalleyCat caught up with Wischenbart for that video interview about what American publishers can learn from Chinese publishing. Short Story Myths Debunked

As the publishing recession drags on, many young writers are advised to avoid short story collections--they seem too hard to sell in this tough economy. Earlier this week GalleyCat interviewed Laura Furman, editor of the annual O. Henry prize anthology, who debunked publishing short story myths. She's edited short story anthology collections for years, and in this video explains that reports of the short story's death are greatly exaggerated. Here's more about the PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories 2009 anthology that Furman edited: "[It] is the result of a new partnership between Vintage and PEN American Center. Portfolio Publisher and His Maestro

Imagine Malcolm Gladwell lecturing a group of corporate executives in the middle of a sweaty basketball game or Paulo Coelho leading a self-help seminar through a desert. Generations of speakers have used metaphors to explain business concepts--long tails, fat tails, sports, war, and card games--but Roger Nierenberg places his audience inside a small orchestra. Yesterday this orchestra conductor and leadership guru gave a lecture about running a business with a full orchestra. Nierenberg illustrated management principles at the Portfolio imprint's event celebrating his upcoming book, "Maestro: A Little Story About Leading by Listening." GalleyCat filmed the climatic final act when twenty invitees crowded on the conductor's podium to experience the driver's seat of an orchestra. Afterward, we caught up with Portfolio Books founder and publisher Adrian Zackheim to find out what this title taught him about publishing.
