Not quite... It seems that George Yates, a high profile member of the Flickr team and one of the site's early employees, was told that she was being given the chop too. She's recently been in Australia so the fact that her bad news arrived a day late, could just be a quirk of travelling. Oates, who designed Flickr's interface, is highly regarded, confirming that this round of job cuts, is basically arbitrary, but it also marks a bit of a watershed for Yahoo. Since its acquisition in 2005, Flickr has been considered the Golden child of Yahoo, a cool web application that they brought in and thought was so good they even dumped the more popular Yahoo photos in favor of it. But, clearly Flickr is no longer untouchable. Despite its reputation, the site was among the assets Yahoo was prepared to sell to Microsoft. Clearly, nothing is untouchable these days, even the success stories.

Cypress Shuts Down In Texas

http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com After exploring all options, Cypress Semiconductor has decided its best course of action is to shut down its facility in Round Rock, Texas. The San Jose-based producer of USB, programmable logic, timing and communication devices will begin layoffs by the end of October, leaving 211 workers and the plant, by the beginning of the year. Cypress notified the Texas Workforce Commission that the layoffs would take place in 4 phases as the company will be consolidating operations, moving production to its Minnesota facility. While exploring other options, Cypress found that it would be in the best interest of the company and its 8,000 employed worldwide, if it made some cutbacks.
