Louise Skelton starts Sam's jumping career (TRAILER)

Given his huge size Sam is remarkably together and helpful, which is just as well as Louise is so tiny! Starting with trotting poles, Louise moves on to a crosspole. Sam obliges but doesn't make much effort. Only when faced with a small upright does he break out of a trot to jump! Encouraged by this, Louise introduces him to his first double, where where he shows some talent for a future in eventing! Louise explains the importance of a progressive approach to allow time to absorb the learning and says keep sessions short as youngsters tire easily.

Told she may not walk again, Louise made a courageous plan from her bed in intensive care. Now cemented and pinned together, she tells Fiona Price that trust is the key ingredient eventing at top level, being so small and riding such big boys!

Europe's top riders provide a rare sneak preview before they descend on the prestigious equestrian venue in historic Fontainebleau, France for the 2009 HSBC FEI European Eventing Championship. Reigning individual gold medallist Nicholas Touzaint from France and the event's most successful medallist William Fox-Pitt of Great Britain will be among riders from 18-countries that are taking part in the four-day dressage, cross-country and jumping event. Held biennially since 1953, the European Championship has been dominated by Great Britain with the nation winning 20-team and 17-individual gold medals. Despite this dominance, reigning Olympic and World Champions from Germany are seen as strong favourites despite not winning a team gold in this competition for 40-years. The event at the new cross-country Fontainebleau course designed by French master Pierre Michelet will mark the third time the country has hosted the European Championships.
