The Third Of Our "Three-Question" Event Surveys From The 2008 AOPA Fly-In

OK... here's the home stretch in our surveys from the 2008 AOPA Fly-In -- one of the best in recent memory. ANN's ever-mobile Aero-TV crews had a BALL at the recently concluded 2008 AOPA Fly-In.... especially since the torrential rains of years past failed to make an appearance and we managed to stay dry for a while.

We mingled with hundreds of AOPA members, gauging their concerns and reactions to a number of questions and topics we raised... giving rise to the obvious third question in our infamous "Three-Question" survey of AOPA members... namely, 'what's the coolest thing you've see while you were here?'

Check out the third of our three survey questions posed at the 2008 AOPA Fly-In to see what was particularly interesting at this year's event.

Each year, as a "thank you" to its 415,000++ members, AOPA hosts an Annual Fly-In and Open House. As in past years, some 100 aviation exhibitors were available for viewing, as well as over 40 display aircraft. Seminars on aviation safety were offered, including presentations by Ron Machado and AOPA President Phil Boyer. Tours of the AOPA headquarters and non-stop opportunities to meet staff members were also offered throughout the day.

Aero-TV was on site to enjoy the warm comradery of this event (in more ways than one... in the 100+ degree heat!), and in addition to a number of neat features (including the intriguing interview with Phil Boyer just a few weeks back), we also used the opportunity to conduct one of our favorite feature programs -- "Three Question" Special Event Surveys -- covering the topics of AOPA member satisfaction with the organization, the effect of rising fuel prices on personal flying activity, and what was catching everyone's attention at this year's event.

Vern Offers Some Additional Background On The Eclipse 400 and 500 Programs

Yup... it sure seems like its jet week all of a sudden. This time, though, we head back to get some more details on THE OTHER new single engine jet... the recently announced Eclipse 400, as well as recent decisions affecting the Eclipse 500 program. ANN's Aero-TV crew caught up with Vern Raburn right after he gave the public go-ahead for the E400 and engaged in some frank discussion in Part Two of a chat with the Eclipse Boss.

It was just a little over a month ago that Raburn told ANN that he was "thrilled" to have the opportunity to introduce a new aircraft to the Eclipse Aviation family ? the Eclipse 400 single-engine jet, the production version of the Eclipse Concept Jet (ECJ), which was first revealed at EAA AirVenture 2007 and profiled exclusively by Aero-TV.

After completing 10 months of extensive research on the ECJ, Eclipse claimed that they were "confident this is the perfect aircraft for the emerging single-engine jet market. As many of you have experienced firsthand, this jet inspires people. It immediately captures their imaginations, and when they look a little closer and begin to grasp the level of performance and value it delivers ? they are truly blown away."

Previous Eclipse customers were the first allowed to place deposits on the 1.35 million dollar Eclipse 400. Public deposits will be accepted starting at EAA AirVenture 2008.

The Eclipse 400 will be powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PW615F engine. Eclipse expects that at an estimated 330 knots, it will use less than one pound of fuel per nautical mile ? making it the world?s most fuel-efficient jet aircraft. It seats four and cruises at 41,000 feet, nearly four miles above its closest 'competition.' Frederick Maryland Hosts a HOT Fly-In!

Each year, as a "thank you" to its 415,000 members, AOPA hosts an Annual Fly-In and Open House. As in past years, some 100 aviation exhibitors were available for viewing, as well as over 40 display aircraft. Seminars on aviation safety were offered, including presentations by Ron Machado and AOPA President Phil Boyer. Tours of the AOPA headquarters and non-stop opportunities to meet staff members were also offered throughout the day.

This year's event was hampered by two major obstacles... though neither of them kept thousands of people from flooding into AOPA HQ. The biggest roadblock was the imposition of a very poorly timed TFR in sympathy with the President's visit to Camp David... just a hop, skip and Touch and Go away. The temporary flight restriction over the presidential retreat at Camp David, Md. (Prohibited Area P-40), was expanded to its larger dimensions (in use when the President is in residence) starting June 6th and went right through the Fly-In. AOPA conducted an aggressive notification campaign to make sure that pilots were aware of this TFR... which like most of them, was offered with little warning and a scarcity of supporting info.

The other issue was one of heat... LOTS of it. The AOPA Fly-In has, in the past, had to deal with lots of rain... but the wet stuff was nowhere to be seen this year as the temps hit the 100 mark and baked all who attended -- but once again, that didn't seem to stop many from making it to the Fly-In.

Once on site, there was plenty to see. Dozens of exhibit aircraft flew in... including the recently introduced Cirrus SR22 with the Garmin Perspective system, the new Eclipse 400 S/E Jet and the Eclipse 500, the Diamond DA40, Cessna's C-400 (Aka Columbia), Piper's Matrix, The Liberty XL-2, a Gobosh LSA, the LoPresti Fury and much more. Over 100 exhibitors offered everything from hearing protection for airborne canines to aircraft financing.

As part of Aero-TV's attendance at Eclipse Aviation's annual 'E-rrival' (profiled in our recent E-rrival Overview story), we were privileged to cover some good news in the form of Eclipse Aviation's announcement and comittment to future certification and production of the single-engine ECJ/Eclipse 400.

Fast Company, Fast Jets, Fast Friends

The 2008 E-rrival just finished a couple of days ago... but its influence will be felt throughout 'jet-dom' for quite the while. This annual gathering of pilots and owners of the Eclipse 500 pocket-rocket VLJ occurs once a year or so for the community to talk shop, learn the latest news and enjoy the comradery of like minded flyers... but this year was different.

Unlike previous years, Eclipse was finally in serious production, as aircraft number 200 saw daylight during this year's festivities. The little dream jet that so many had hoped for, for so long, and through so many travails, was finally a reality... though nonetheless, still, a work in progress.

The Eclipse Aviation Customer E-rrival was an exciting weekend -- featuring an address from Eclipse President and CEO Vern Raburn, information sessions about owning, operating, and maintaining the Eclipse 500, a hysterical luncheon speech from Rod Machado, tours of the Eclipse facilities, simulator flights; a golf event, reception and banquet; and family outings to New Mexico attractions.

This E-rrival also marked the company's its 10-year anniversary as some 300 customers and guests touched down in Albuquerque for the three-day event, some of them actually arriving in their own Eclipse 500 jets.

The event served as the opportunity to headline some major news from Eclipse. Raburn told ANN that he was "thrilled" to have the opportunity to introduce a new aircraft to the Eclipse Aviation family ? the Eclipse 400 single-engine jet. Lakeland Got Off To A Muted Start... But There Were Some Pleasant Surprises While Lakeland's annual Fly-In is not without its fair share (OK, more than its fair share) of problems, it is pretty much the lead off event for a new year's fly-in season... and thus looked forward to with great anticipation. This year was no exception. We saw the first sight of the Pilatus PC-12NG, the Liberty Vanguard, Garmin's AMAZING SVT and just as it all concluded, ANN Managing Editor, Rob Finfrock, got his Sport Pilot's license... so despite all the nonsense we usually have to deal with, we not only found a way to have a good time this year, we did better than most--especially with Rob's triumph to brag about. So... today, Aero-TV does something a little different... here are some of the sights and sounds of the 2008 Lakeland Fly-In, narrated by Paul Plack and EXPERTLY shot by Aero-TV Videographers Nathan Cremisino, Jim Grosser and Laura Jobe... all under the supervision of Aero-TV''s Sr. Producer, Sarah "The Whip" Curtiss. Much of the footage has been seen, in bits and pieces in recent Aero-TV features and there is FAR MORE to come, as well, from our work at this event.
