Left Hand Brewing - Smoke Jumper Imperial Smoked Porter

This week we sample an unusual beer to many: Left Hand Brewing Company's Smoke Jumper Imperial Smoked Porter! This is dark and nicely smoked off the nose. They use hot and cold smoked barley malt to give it it's incredible flavor. There is also a nice sweetness coming from molasses, and a nice hoppiness as well. It was a GABF gold medal winner in 2009 in the smoked beer category. Distributed by Tubemogul.

The Midnight Brewing Project continues with an espresso milk stout that will blow your doors off!! Left Hand Brewing and Terrapin Brewing has released their second collaboration brew called Depth Charge. This is a creamy espresso milk stout with a very smooth mouth feel. The espresso explosion off the nose sets you up for a very different kind of beer that only these two breweries could come up with. We've already discussed Shipyard Brewing Company's Pumpkinhead and universally enjoyed it. This week we try their Smashed Pumpkin from their Pugsley's Signature Series. Part of a special series of beers named after brewmaster Alan Pugsley, Smashed Pumpkin is a big beer coming in at 9% ABV. But don't be fooled: this pumpkin beer is not boozy; it's bold and would be a great addition to your holiday meals! Goes great with sharp cheeses, nuts, lamb, hearty stews and desserts like flan or pumpkin pie. Chefs find this an excellent beer to cook with in dishes such as braised short ribs. Once called "The Heisman" and now lovingly referred to as Dortmunder Gold, this is a unique lager style beer from the Dortmund region of Germany. Since 1990, this beer has won 14 Gold and 1 Silver medal from the Great American Beer Fest and World Beer Championships. Is it worth the gold it's been receiving? Oh, oh my yes.

Episode 118 - Great Lakes Eliot Ness

The Eliot Ness is a Vienna style lager - a lager that maintains crispness while at the same time allowing some darker malts to make their way in to the beer. (Sam Adams Boston Lager is the most widely known Vienna style lager in the US.) This particular lager is named after Eliot Ness, the famous leader of The Untouchables, and it is both ironic and fitting. While Ness spent much of his career enforcing prohibition, he was also well known to appreciate a libation or two. As if that weren't enough of a reason to put him on a bottle, the mother of the owners of Great Lakes was Eliot Ness's stenographer! What's that? How's the beer? It would make Eliot Ness proud, we think.

One of our "Great Lakes Brewing" series, we examine the Commodore Perry IPA. The beer celebrates an epic battle fought by Commodore Perry and his men on Lake Erie during the war of 1812. This IPA actually presents a nice malt nose, which doesn't necessarily accompany all IPAs, and that helps this beer along its journey to becoming an incredible beer. Wonderfully complex and balanced, yet still ending with a traditional IPA bitter, this beer scores quite high with both of us.

Wow!! The Stone Factor: Here are a few extra things regarding this episode. First, a correction from our previous episode which featured Stone Brewing Company beers. We said Stone was located in San Marcos, CA. but they have actually moved to Escondido, CA. Thank you Matt Steirnagle for helping us get the facts straight! A few extra words about the Weeping Radish Farm and Brewery. The Weeping Radish is proud to introduce its “Farmer to Fork” food concept, also known as "Reinheitsgebot" food. The US food chain has consistently expanded and by now the average food travels over 2000 miles between the farm and your plate. A large amount of our food is even imported from other countries with little oversight and control. Every perishable commodity (which includes most food we eat) requires additives, chemicals and preservatives in order to “survive” this processing and distribution system. For this reason they have built thier Eco Farm, Butchery and Smoke House in Jarvisburg, North Carolina. This allows them to purchase hormone-free beef and free-range pork from local farms, and supervise the butchering and smoking process. They are also a member of the Eastern Carolina Organics Co-op, and bring organic vegetables directly to their farm. The Juxtaposition Black Pilsner! Episode 114 - Arcadia Jaw-Jacker

We've loved just about everything we've tried from Arcadia Brewing Company in Battle Creek, Michigan. Turns out, the Jaw-Jacker is no exception. Although this steps slightly to the side of an actual "Pumpkin Ale" (because it has no pumpkin, a mistake many people make) it does use the spices you would expect, and is in fact a Spiced Beer. Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice - it's all there in a fantastic tribute to Pumpkin Pie. A 95 from Johnny and a 92 from Dave means you have to go try this!
