Using Active Record to write less code Ayende Rahien, We!, Israel What would you say if I told you that you can stop writing data access code in .Net? Aren't you tired of writing the same thing over and over again, opening connection, querying the database, figuring out what to return, getting back untype data that you need to start putting on the form? Do you really see some value in writing yet another UPDATE statement?The Active Record framework allows you to fully utilize the power of the database, but without the back breaking work that it used to take. Active Record uses .Net objects to relieve you from the repeating task of persistence. Those objects are schema aware and can persist and load themselves without you needing to write a single line of SQL. Building business application using Active Record is a pleasure, the database stuff just happens, and you are free to implement the business functionality.

Microsoft and ALT.NET - At the crossroads Glenn Block, Microsoft, USA ALT.NET represents a community of thought leaders with a call to action of improving the status quo of how software is developed in the Microsoft developer ecosystem. ALT.NET encourages very strict adherence to agile practices such as BDD (Behavior Driven Development) and tools that map to those practices fairly closely. The result is that they have historically recommend open-source solutions such as NHibernate, Structure Map and Castle's Monorail over Microsoft's platform solutions. How has Microsoft responded at this crossroads? The answer has been is to become part of the community itself . As a result, several efforts have spawned throughout the company which are taking ALT.NET feedback and translating it into action. This includes providing better integration with open-source solutions, and supporting leading-edge ways to develop software. Good Test, Better Code - From Unit Testing to Behavior-Driven Development Scott Bellware, Independent, USA "Testing is design"; "Unit tests are documentation"; "Tests are specifications". These are sought-after rewards of developer testing practices, but simply writing tests or even writing tests before writing production code doesn't make these wishes come true. When we take up unit testing, we initially tend to do things a certain way. Over time we might adopt test-driven development, mock-objects, and ultimately we might adopt the specification and design practices that lead to the lauded benefits of self-documenting code, design through test, and ultimately to a greater level of agility. This presentation walks through some of the principal phases of evolving basic testing skills toward sustainable agility through test-driven, client-driven, and behavior-driven programming, touching on unit-testing, mock objects, test-driven development, behavior-driven development, and domain-specific languages for testing.
