Mumbai Terror Attacks, Big Event for Online Video Journalism

http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/mumbai-terror-a.html As the world has tuned into to live coverage of breaking news on network news channels, others found videos on demand on most of the major news sites and on YouTube, which has uploads of coverage of Indian broadcasters. I've posted the video below. We haven't seen much in the way of user-generated video yet, although there many dramatic photos up on CNN iReports. CNN has featured live streaming of the events from the beginning. Last month at the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable, we discussed the value of user-generated video for news sites. Commenting in this video is Chet Rhodes of the Washington Post, Andrew Heyward, former president of CBS News, Mark Larkin of CBSNews.com, KC Estenson of CNN.com and co-moderator Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch. It will be interesting to see how the unfolding effects of the attacks in India will impact this trend. YouTube Has Essential Analytics Tool, Laura Lee

YouTube's Strategic Partner Development Manager Laura Lee explained the value of YouTube Insight for both content creators and marketers at the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable last month. "That tool I think has been really powerful especially to our content publishers, because they can go in and say, 'You know what, I can make marketing decisions, I can even make programming decisions online real time to drill down on a per state level in the U.S. to see how people are really consuming my content," she says. In late September, YouTube introduced a new feature for Insight called Hot Spots to allow publishers not only to see their most popular videos, but the most popular parts within their videos. We expect Insight to get even more sophisticated with YouTube's new focus on professional, long-form content. YouTube has already acquired television programming and feature films through its recent and much talked-about deals with CBS and MGM. Greg Sandoval's recent story for CNET, "A coming of age for YouTube," describes YouTube's recent monetization developments. Insight was launched in March of last year but has not been widely discussed. Beet.TV Popular with California Dudes! http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/no-standard-way.html User-generated content is notoriously difficult to monetize, but it's not a lost cause: Ogilvy Group Planning Director Gina de Mendonca says it has potential, especially when professionals play a role in curating it. De Mendonca is a partner at the advertising agency's digital division neo@Ogilvy, where she works with clients like IBM. "You have to think about it a little more creatively. There has to be some element of control, and that's when it has worked most successfully," she told me in an interview after the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable . "But just broad-scale user-generated content often can be a little bit risky for some clients." UGC video mash-ups and contests are good examples of content that can be monetized, according to de Mendonca. (Yahoo's Jimmy Pitaro discussed the success of such mash-ups his interview with Beet). In the segment, Mendonca also discusses other obstacles to ad spending online, such as a lack of standardized formats and analytics. "I think there will need to be a standardization of formats, that will be the first thing that happens, and once there's a standard format that we use across some of the different ways to get video out there, then we'll definitely get some success measures baked into that," she says. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

This is a long expected development and part of a strategic plan for VideoEgg to shift from being a video sharing site to an ad network. This morning the company sent out a blast to all the users of the consumer service that videos will not be available after May 31 and suggested that users who want their clips download their files. When Beet.TV started out in March, 2006, we used VideoEgg to publish our video files. We found it to be a very effective and user friendly. Very early on, it allowed users to post videos directly onto TypePad and other blogs. A great help. So, thanks guys for building such a cool company and tools that have been so helpful to the video blogging community. And, hey, if you have videos on VideoEgg, download them ASAP. Here's info on saving files. I have republished above my interview with VideoEgg CEO Matt Sanchez.
