With roughly half of all dogs in the United States being mixed breed and the bulk of owners (86 percent) unsure of their pet’s breed composition, it comes as no surprise that dog owners are anxious to answer “What is my dog?” By knowing the breed of your dog, you and your vet can be on the lookout for common health risks. For any given breed of dog, there are a list of health conditions and characteristics specific to that breed. But if you don’t know the breed of your dog, you might be missing an opportunity to protect him. Now there is a mixed-breed genetic identification for dogs that finally answers that age-old question by analyzing doggy DNA, as far back as a dog’s great grandparents, unlocking the breed makeup of the dog. Dr. Marty Becker, nationally known pet expert is available to help mixed breed dog owners understand why determining the breed of their dog helps them take the best possible care of their pets. He will be joined by one of the world’s foremost companion animal geneticists, Dr. Neale Fretwell, who will be able to discuss a new test that allows pet owners to determine their dog’s mix.
