ANN's Flagship Undergoes A Major Upgrade They say its kinda like watching someone you love going "under the knife," and so there I was, watching my treasured Cirrus G3 Turbo, cast about in pieces all over the hangar at Sarasota Avionics. It was a tough thing to see... but the weeks beforehand were even tougher as we considered the whys and wherefores of undertaking a major (i.e., expensive and extensive) avionics upgrade -- switching from our highly dependable and easy-to-use Entegra 'Generation One' System... to the "next big thing..." i.e., Avidyne's much ballyhooed and promoted "Release 9." Come along with Aero-News for the first part of our look into the technically tasking endeavor we've undertaken... namely taking a good airplane and making it (to our mind) even better. With the help of Avidyne and what is turning out to be an exceptionally avionics shop, Sarasota Avionics, we're going to start documenting the trials and tribulations of this little adventure over the coming months. As we write this, the airplane is done and here on the field at Oshkosh 2009... what we've seen so far is absolutely stunning... but when we fly the beast home next week and start beating her up on a regular basis, we're going to find out, in no uncertain terms, if the Release 9 hype measures up to the capability and engineering. The MacMahans Talk Biplanes... At Oshkosh 2008! Miss Muffet may seem like an unlikely name for a proud biplane, but if you listen to the MacMahans a bit, the name makes perfect sense. The owners of a beautiful blue and red 1941 Boeing A75N1 (PT17) Stearman, the two seat trainer bipe is powered by a Lycoming R680-4P-B4 and has received lavish care over the years from the MacMahan family. Back for its second year since a complete restoration, the proud Boeing Stearman drew admiring glances from thousands of pilots who came upon it... and devoutly wished for one just like it. While most folks know the Boeing Model 75 by the common name of "Stearman," it has worn a number of hats and been called a lot of names... (and a few of those weren't nice ones, if you learned to fly taildraggers in this bird). The US Army Air Corps designation for the A75N1 is "PT-17," the Navy designation is "N2S," and the Canadian military designation is "Kaydet." The Stearman was originally designed to serve as a trainer, and many a WWII flyer got their start in the open cockpit of this amazing aircraft. After the war, a number of Stearmans found their way into civilian use as barnstormers and crop dusters. Boeing notes that the two-seater biplane was introduced by the Stearman Aircraft Division of Boeing in Wichita, Kan., in 1934 and conducted it first flight on November 26th of that year. The A75 has fabric-covered wooden wings, single-leg landing gear and an over-built welded-steel fuselage. Only radial engines were used. Between 1936 and 1944, Boeing built 8,584 of them, in all versions, plus the equivalent of 2,000 more in spares. In addition to sales to the Navy and the Army Air Corps, the trainers were sold to Canada, China, the Philippines, Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil for both military and civilian uses. Aero-TV: Heading For Production -- A Cessna Skycatcher Update

The SkyCatchers Are Coming... Soon! It won't be long now... before brand new Cessna LSAs start taking to the sky to help a new generation of aviators take wing. At the 2009 US Sport Aviation Expo, ANN's Jim Campbell caught up with the Cessna folks to get an update on the SkyCatcher program. At this time, all engineering work and testing of the 162 SkyCatcher is being completed according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. Remaining flight tests are focused on gathering data and making minor refinements to ensure the aircraft complies with ASTM requirements and fulfills its intended role in the training and sport flying market. An extensive Ground Vibration Test, though not an ASTM requirement, was conducted to meet Cessna’s lofty standards for airframe integrity. Additional testing beyond the ASTM requirements will include a full airframe fatigue test on a production aircraft. Cessna plans to begin deliveries in the US later this year. The $111,500 Model 162 has two-seat capacity including the pilot. Suitable allowance for luggage is provided aft of the seats. A left hand and right hand door allow access for the pilot and passenger. An all-new Garmin G300 avionics package was specifically designed for the SkyCatcher. A single Garmin G300 display will provide primary flight, engine and moving map information in a split screen format. Other standard equipment will include a Garmin SL40 Com radio, Garmin GTX327 Mode C transponder, VFR GPS and a 121.5 MHz ELT. Options include a second MFD, audio panel and autopilot. The SkyCatcher's use of a novel iteration of dual control sticks makes for a roomy and functional cockpit. Teledyne Continental's new O-200D will be doing motivational duty for all SkyCatchers. Let's Get Up Close And Personal With A Flying Legend Seen in a two part Aero-TV program a few weeks back, we talked about spending time with a ghost. In this case, the ghost looked a lot like a B-17... by the name of "Thunderbird." We're back with Thunderbird one more time... this time to do a walk-around of the grand old beast, to look her over from stem to stern and teach you a few things about one of the grandest birds to grace the skies. The B-17 Flying Fortress was an Army Air Corps heavy-duty bomber from World War II. These four-engine aircraft flew strategic bombing missions over Europe armed with .50 caliber machine guns and five thousand pounds of bombs. 13,000 B-17’s were produced over the course of the war, of which only 13 still are airworthy today. The Lone Star Flight Museum’s B-17 is painted in the colors of ‘Thunderbird’, an aircraft with the 303rd bomb group which flew 116 missions during World War II. The Lone Star Flight Museum tells ANN that it, a 501 (c)(3) self-supporting educational museum, began as a private aircraft collection in June 1985. The acquisition of more aircraft quickly led to a search for a new home. In 1990, construction of a 50,000 sq. ft. Phase I facility began at Galveston's Scholes Field. Continued rapid growth required construction of a 30,000 sq. ft. Phase II hangar in 1991. Along with the aircraft collection, the LSFM began to acquire and display aviation memorabilia and artifacts, develop educational programs, and recruit volunteers through a Membership Program implemented in July 1991. The LSFM receives over 35,000 of volunteer service hours each year. Many programs and participation opportunities are available for members to promote and support the LSFM mission. Aero-TV Profiles The Dash For A Cure -- ALS Awareness In Flight Two Pilots Attempt To Set A Record And Raise Much-Needed Money To Fight A Deadly Disease As noted in the ANN story that profiles the magnificent efforts of two flyers to race around the world and raise money to fight ALS. CarolAnn Garratt and Carol Foy, who have family members diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, will circumnavigate the world in seven days, in a small Mooney M20, attempting to shatter a world record to raise money and awareness for ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It will be an extraordinary trip... From central Florida, the two will fly non-stop across the United States to San Diego, California. After a quick gas stop and supply replenishments they will set out for Lihue, Hawaii, taking on a trip of approximately 16 hours of flying -- with good tailwinds. Leaving Hawaii, their second longest leg is ahead of them, 3202 nautical miles to Guam. They hope to catch 25 to 30 knot tail winds to help them along. There will be a time and distance check during this leg at which time they might decide to deviate to an extra stop in the Marshall Islands, if necessary. After Guam they'll head for Thailand, another 2618 nautical miles, almost 3000 statute miles, where they will be met by friends (which, they note, is always helpful in a foreign country). This is especially important on this trip to facilitate re-fueling and landing and departure paperwork. An oil and filter change and engine check will be performed during this stop. Leaving Thailand, Garratt and Foy have a long leg across India to Oman then will head down the Gulf of Aden to Djibouti. Crossing Africa they will only stop once in Bamako, Mali, then fly to the Cape Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa. This is a regular jumping off point for sailors and pilots crossing the Atlantic Ocean. With good tailwinds, they will be on their longest non-stop leg, 3303 nautical miles

The Brady's Rugged Little RANS S-7 While I'm sure that you're having as much fun with the heavy iron and hot biz birds as we are, sometimes it makes sense to get back to basics... especially when Part 2 of our program on the Eclipse Training Program gets nuked by a bad hard drive (Don't worry, we'll salvage it and have it for you shortly) and we really needed a good excuse to put up a different program. Grin. OK... so let's get to the meat of the matter. While perusing Oshkosh 2008, we ran into lots of REALLY cool people, planes and products... sometimes all at once. The Bradys provided one of those welcome interludes as well as an excuse for a cool Aero-TV piece... from the perspective of a Sport Aviation couple and their little RANS S-7. Their RANS S-7 was the result of a "need to train Coyote I pilots: (the single seat Randy Schlitter design that preceded the S-7 by a number of years). Named the Courier in honor of one of Designer Schlitter's favorite planes, The Helio Courier, the S-7 must have inherited some Helio spirit, since it also is very STOL. Built with keeping-it-simple in mind the original plane weighed in at only 390 pounds with a 503 Rotax. It flew very well for the low horsepower, but soon was fitted to the 65 HP 532. Over the years the basic plane stayed true to form, a light, simple plane, with traditional construction, minus the traditional headaches. However, in 2001 the S-7C, a much-refined version, was certified under the primary category. This plane represented 7 years of process to obtain the Type Certificate. In 2003 they introduced the S-7S, the kit form of the "C", and enjoy strong sales of this very much-refined fun flyer. The S-7S also complies with the new Sport Plane Rule. Because the S-7S complies with the ASTM standards for sportplanes they are also able to offer this plane in ready to fly form. Designated the S-7LS, this form of a ready to fly Courier is in production with deliveries

Over 30,000 Homebuilders Gotta Be Up To Something... This year's rendition of the Annual Oshkosh Aerial Love-Fest was a watershed event for all things homebuilding. In addition to the usual assortment of THOUSANDS of amazing personally-crafted experimental aircraft in attendance, the 30,000th such bird was found and celebrated. Yuma, AZ homebuilder Bob Noll's RV-9A airplane was recognized as the honorary 30,000th US-registered homebuilt at a ceremony at AirVenture 2008. Standing on stage with his daughter Katrina who came to AirVenture with him, acting FAA Administrator Bobby Sturgell, FAA Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety Nick Sabatini, EAA President Tom Poberezny and EAA Founder Paul Poberezny were on hand to recognize the milestone of 30,000 homebuilt airplanes registered. Paul Poberezny was asked how he felt about the milestone after 55 years since he founded EAA. His answer, "unbelievable, simply unbelievable." to which he gave a thumbs up. EAA Founder Paul Poberezny commented that he came along at the "right time" back in 1953, that the (then) CAA supported the movement. Now, 55 years later, the work was "worthwhile." Even FAA Boss, Bobby Sturgell, commented the first homebuilders were the Wright Brothers. He went on to say that the FAA is a willing participant in the homebuilt movement which supports homebuilding as recreational, educational as well as fun. He cited the example of winglets and Wittman-style landing gear as being technology which flowed from the homebuilt airplane. (At the subsequent "Meet the Boss" forum, Administrator Sturgell additionally commented that the number 30,000 represents 10 percent of the registered airplanes in the US.) Aero-TV Offers A Close Look At The Martin 'Jetpack'

5,000 People Witness First Public Flight Of Unique Vertical Lift Device The Martin JetPack caused quite a stir at Oshkosh 2008... though to be accurate, the device was anything BUT a 'Jetpack.' Still... it proved to be a huge draw in an arena where there are no small number of things to attract one's attention. EAA officials report as many as 5,000 eager spectators were on hand for the Tuesday morning demo in AeroShell Square where the first public flight of the much-anticipated Martin Jetpack took place... and having been among that crowd ourselves, we think that number might even be slightly low. In fact, organizers seemed a bit surprised with the large turnout, as the assembled throngs were slowly moved out of the way to make room for the demo flight at show center, forcing some against the barriers placed around AeroShell's other "big" attraction Tuesday, the Boeing Dreamlifter. Any crowd discomfort was assuaged, however, when Harrison Martin took the "stage" wearing the somewhat bulky contraption strapped to his back. Despite its high-flying name, the Martin Jetpack isn't a jet pack at all. Actually, it's closer in concept to a wearable Moller Aircar... with a small two-stroke engine providing power to twin ducted fans, one mounted on either side of the wearer's body. Harrison, 16, lit the engines just before 10 am Oshkosh time... and for the next 55 seconds or so, hovered more-or-less in place about two feet off the ground, as spectators (including us) held their cameras high overhead, hoping to catch a shot of the impressive feat. Glenn Martin -- Harrison's dad, and the contraption's inventor -- hopes to sell his first 10 jetpacks for $100,000 each. We've little doubt he'll pull that off, especially given the crowd's reaction.
