San Jose del Pacifico is a tiny village of some 500 residents that is no more than a sprinkling of houses and cabins for rent on either side of a narrow mountain road that winds through thick pine forests. San Jose is a common stop on the international backpacker trail and well-known for the hallucinogenic hongos that grow wild in the forest. I arrived just after sunset and stepped into La Taberna de los Duendes (The Gnome's Tavern) on Jan. 6, after one week of holiday celebrations on the coast of Oaxaca, enjoying the beaches and hot weather. I had to adjust to the temperature change, put on a jacket, and found myself following a procession down the only road through town. I walked into the most adorable bar/restaurant owned by an Italian, Davide and his partner Heriberto from San Jose. I was immediately treated as if I was an old friend of theirs. I was invited to sit with them for dinner, then invited to stay with them, and another couple in their lovely house for a week.

The Hongero Hombre or Fungus Man was seen in Oaxaca Mexico over this past summer, this rare footage was shot just before he attacked the camera crew. They barely survived with their lives.
