MeToday - November 22, 2009: Too hot/humid

Today was very hot and incredibly humid. It was hard to stand. Even one of the coolest rooms in the house was hardly bearable. I processed hundreds of photos in Lightroom today. I must have spent at least 10 hours in it. Talk about crushing it!! At 0115hrs a cold breeze arrived and coold down the house really quickly. Thank Moses and his friends! Back in the film days, we used an array of filters to change and vary the tonalities of the scene in our B&W photography. We would make all the necessary final tweaks in the darkroom when printing the final image. The master of B&W image was, of course, Ansel Adams. I wonder, if Ansel was still around today, if he would be shooting digitally. I think so - getting to the finished result with software tools like Lightroom and Photoshop make it not only a breeze to get to a great result. but for me, it even more fun that the film days. Before and After Magic

This tutorial will show you how I changed a fairly average location into something quite dramatic. I really wanted to add a sense of the “dramatic” to this particular image and I thought I'd do it with color. I remember this sky not being all that exciting – you know, kind of grayish, clouds not too exciting and actually quite dull. I knew my main challenge was to really, really “pop” the sky. The final result is a combination of three elements: 1 – Lighting technique. 2 – Lightroom technique. 3 – Photoshop technique. Combining these three resources resulted in the photograph that I thought was strikingly different than your normal wedding image. Hit the PLAY button below to see how I pulled it off.
