Adobe Flash Player 10 Has 3D Transformation, Dynamic Streaming

Adobe Flash Player 10 is now available for free download, the company announced today. Andy interviewed Jim Guerard, VP of Adobe Dynamic Media, in Palo Alto this summer about the second beta version of the player; I republished the interview above.

The player will offer native 3D transformation and animation and advanced audio processing, among other improvements. Liz Gannes at NewTeeVee notes in her piece about the player that the dynamic streaming will be the most significant improvement for online video viewers. The player is available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux at www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer.

Adobe Expects 100 Million Installs of AIR This Year; Next Step, AIR for Mobile

CAMBRIDGE, Mass -- Adobe AIR runtime environment has been installed on 35 million PCs and will reach 100 million by the end of the year, Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch told Andy in this interview. He caught up with Lynch at the EmTech08 conference last week.

Developers can use Adobe AIR to build rich, cross-platform Internet applications that deploy to the desktop.

Lynch says Adobe is working to bring a version of AIR to mobile devices that should be ready in the next year or two.

Adobe is Working on Flash for iPhone, Report

An Adobe official has confirmed that Adobe is working on Flash technology for the iPhone, and that the player will be available in a very short time if Apple gives it the OK, according to a report by iPhone Atlas. Adobe already has Flash running on an iPhone emulator.

Andy interviewed Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch about the evolution of Flash at the MIT Technology Review EmTech08 conference last week.

Flash is the most broadly deployed technology on the web today and the Flash Player is responsible for drastically improving the online video viewing experience, according to Lynch. Flash would improve the viewing of web video and rich media pages on the iPhone, so we hope Apple says yes to the technology sooner rather than later.

Adobe will continue working on online video innovations, like text search within video, indexing video with search engines at different time points, and interactivity, Lynch says.

This is the second of our interview with Lynch. Last week we posted an interview about Adobe and mobile devices. He does not address Flash and iPhone in this interview.

Akamai Aims to Unite Industry Around Standard Open Video Player

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Content distribution network Akamai Technologies launched Openvideoplayer.com in an effort to unite the video publishing industry around an standardized video player. The base source code Akamai contributed to the Open Video Player has already been used by customers including Hulu and The NBA.

The industry needs a player "that is standard, much like the television is standard, and everyone knows, you know, how to easily develop content for it and how to insert the ads," Senior Industry Marketing Manager for Digital Media Suzanne Johnson says. Andy interviewed Johnson at the Akamai offices in Cambridge last week.

Akamai teamed up with Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight to provide easy-to-use advertising plug-ins for the Open Video Player.

Partners for the initiative include 24/7 Real Media, Adobe Corporation, Microsoft, Clickability, and Panache. The full press release can be read here.

A standardized player would certainly make audience measurement and ad delivery easier, and we'll be interested to see how this develops.

Vortex Variation

New Document

Make a new document, anysize doesn't matter. Press CNTRL+D to reset your pallete colors. Make sure your background is BLACK.

Apply Filter - Plastic Wrap

Apply Filter>Artistic>Plastic Wrap with these settings:

Highlight 20, Detail 15 Smoothness 15

Apply Filter

Filter>Distort>Twirl: Twirl Move the slider to get the proper amount of twirl

Apply Filter - Chrome

Apply Filter>Sketch>Chrome with these settings:
Detail 10 and smoothness 10

Add Color

Add the color now, press CNTRL+U: or IMAGE-ADJUSTMENTS-HUE/SATURATION

Duplicate Layer

Now Duplicate the layer. Set the top layer blending change to Soft Light.

Press CNTRL+E to emerge the 2 layers back together. OR LAYER-FLATTEN Fill Color
Select the paint bucket tool, set your foreground color to black. Find a spot on the graphic and try the paint bucket tool:

Now we want to smoothen out the edges, go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and try different settings to get the desired result.

SELECT ALL
EDIT-TRANFORM-PERSPECTIVE

Use the bucket tool to make the background black and the paintbrush set to black to paint out any imperfections.

LAYER-NEW LAYER use the bucket tool to make a new black layer. Set the transparency settings to screen

FILTER-ADD NOISE move the slider to add just a little bit

Use the brush tool set to white to add in different random stars

FILTER-BLUR-RADIAL blur set to ZOOM and just add a little blur.

FLATTEN all your layers and

IMAGE-ADJUST LEVALS make your blacks darker and your whites brighter.

How to make Lightning

1.FILE- New Document and you can make it 8x10 or whatever suits your needs.
2.Use the bucket tool to make the background black
3.FILTER-RENDER CLOUDS
4.FILTER-RENDER DIFFERENCE CLOUD
5.APPLE-I for invert (command I for PC)
6.IMAGE-ADJUSTMENTS and move the grey slider darker until you get the desired look.
7.IMAGE-CURVES and tweak it a bit it fine tune it.
8.You can either use COLOR BALANCE or for this example I used IMAGE- HUE/SATURATION check the colorize box and adjust the sliders to get the desired look.
9.Use the text tool to add type. I start with white type and add blending options at the bottom of the layers tool.
