Michael "What The Buck" Buckley talks with Liz Shannon Miller in a fireside chat at NewTeeVee Live 2008 about how he negotiates promotional consideratons in his breakaway hit show channel on You Tube. Product placements may be acceptable when it fits genuinely into his own genuine usage and discussion patterns. Because his show is scripted, he can do shout-outs and calls-to-action. He selectively writes reviews and critiques of other webseries as content for his show, as such content belongs inside his format. He also produces promotional videos commercially to specification for YouTube distribution, while using pecuniary deal size guidelines, just as with shout-outs and mentions inside of "What the Buck".

Michael "What The Buck" Buckley talks with Liz Shannon Miller in a fireside chat at NewTeeVee Live 2008 about how he gained prominence on YouTube with his breakaway hit show. In the fall of 2007 he became aware that he attained the rank of 98th most subscribed comedian of all times with 300 subscribers. This spurred his competitive energy to rise in the totem pole. At the point, he obviously was making no money on YouTube. He had a full-time job until September 2008, while working another forty hours per week these past couple of years on his You Tube channel. At that turning point, his subscriber base had grown to more than 300,000 and it no longer made sense to work for someone else.

Michael asks us to think about why is there so much great content that goes unnoticed. He reiterates that strategic marketing is a commitment to core activities (PR bulletins, user engagement, observing new niches) that remains constant while content performance metrics may fluctuate. So enjoy the marketing and business aspects of the challenge, and sink your teeth into them with gusto. More importantly, he stresses that you should always love what you are creating. While you may have an agent and an attorney, you also need to make yourself comfortable with negotiation and making your own deal points. Above all, nurture and keep your program in your domain, rather than sell out to a broadcast ownership group (I'm tempted to joke about doing a hulu). It's your baby.

While he may have other deals (BlogTV, Sony, HBO, E!) come and go, and these may be worthwhile in their moment, Michael regards YouTube as his bread-and-butter, and dances with the one who brought him there. His long-term vision is built around doing what he loves to do while thriving on the internet with "What The Buck". He advises creators to value their own work, brand, and reputation rather than be seduced by fast-buck propositions which lead to selling out on-the-cheap. Michael also emphasizes the importance of extending you brand and image in your blog. Interestingly, it was when he began sharing personal aspects of his life through his blog that "What The Buck" zoomed in popularity. Content creators, take heed! While your content should be of high quality, remember that the audience wants a real person who engages with them. Being authentic is the key to activating viewership.

YouTube Meetup NYC
