Akamai Aims to Unite Industry Around Standard Open Video Player

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Content distribution network Akamai Technologies launched Openvideoplayer.com in an effort to unite the video publishing industry around an standardized video player. The base source code Akamai contributed to the Open Video Player has already been used by customers including Hulu and The NBA.

The industry needs a player "that is standard, much like the television is standard, and everyone knows, you know, how to easily develop content for it and how to insert the ads," Senior Industry Marketing Manager for Digital Media Suzanne Johnson says. Andy interviewed Johnson at the Akamai offices in Cambridge last week.

Akamai teamed up with Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight to provide easy-to-use advertising plug-ins for the Open Video Player.

Partners for the initiative include 24/7 Real Media, Adobe Corporation, Microsoft, Clickability, and Panache. The full press release can be read here.

A standardized player would certainly make audience measurement and ad delivery easier, and we'll be interested to see how this develops.

DoubleClick Powers NBC Olympics Online Ad Insertion......No Overlay Ads Permitted by the IOC

For those of us who don't like to see overlay ads pop up or stream while watching video, you won't see any on the NBC Olympics coverage on MSN. That's a mandate from the International Olympic Committee, which keeps tight control of the way the Games are presented.

Microsoft's Eric Schmidt is one of the key executives in the MSN/NBC Sports joint effort for online coverage of the Olympics in the United States. He came by the Beet.TV studios on Friday to fill us in on various technical and advertising-related topics around the Olympics.

The ad formats are much like on television, with pre-roll ads and in-stream ads inserted between pauses in events.

All the ad inventory is managed by Google's DoubleClick. This is the first insertion of DoubleClick ads into Silverlight, the new Microsoft rich-media platform. The agreement to integrate DoubleClick and Silverlight was announced just last week.

Netflix Could Use Microsoft Silvelight as "Platform of Choice" -- DRM could be Key, Report

Microsoft Silverlight, the new rich media Web plug-in, "could become the platform of choice" for Netflix according to a report by Ryan Lawler tonight on Contentinople. Ryan attributes the story to a Netflix executive.

Silverlight Seems that big issue is that Netflix only streams to PC's. It doesn't stream to Macs as there is not proper digital rights management software available. Silverlight, which is OS agnostic, could be solution.

I've posted above my interview with Microsoft's Steve Sklepowich from NAB in Las Vegas in May. Steve explains the digital rights management in Silverlight.

Panache Provides In-Stream Ad Solution for Adobe Media Player, Flash and Silverlight

At Streaming Media East last week, Adobe gave some valuable booth real estate to Panache, an Encino-based software company that is providing a solution to publishers to integrate in-stream video advertising into the new Adobe Media Player.

The company's software works with both Flash and Silverlight video players.

Unlike companies which provide in-stream services and share advertising revenue, Panache provides solution for publishers to manage the insertion of pre-roll, overlay and post roll ads into their video stream though a software solution. Publishers pay on usage but not on ad revenue.

We spoke with Panache's Steve Robinson last week.

Microsoft Sees Adoption for Silverlight Trending Big in China

I caught up with veteran Microsoft engineer Charles Finkelstein earlier this week at Streaming Media East. Charles shares a few updates on Silverlight, the new rich media web plug-in, and how the new version will be implemented for the Summer Olympics.

Charles runs the Expression team, the encoding system for Silverlight.

Way back, 10 years ago, Charles was an integral part of Microsoft Movie Maker, the video editing program shipped with virtually all versions of Windows. Charles says the latest version in Vista can handle HD and as much as 80 percent of professional editing tasks.

Clarification: Charles ask that I note that in the interview, he meant to say "XAML is based on XML? rather that HTML.

Times Provides Silverlight Plug-in for NYT Reader for Macs

Update: 5/23 The New York Times has the Silverlight plug-in for the new Times Reader for Macs. Here's the reason it is being used, according to Rob Larson, VP of Digital Production at The Times. Beet.TV received this statement this afternoon:

"We are using Microsoft?s Silverlight technology to render the pages on the Mac version. Silverlight includes a subset of the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) tools we use on the PC version. This allows us to keep the look and feel of the Mac version very close to the PC version and also allows us to reuse code across platforms."

Posted on Saturday, April 19, 2008 www.beet.tv Microsoft Links with Move Networks for "DVD-Like" Online Video Experience Move Networks, the little start-up in Utah, has impressed many in the industry with super high quality streaming technology that does not appear to hog too much bandwidth. To see how great it looks, check out ABC.com -- that's the Move player on the videos. Last month, Microsoft announced an alliance with Move to integrate its new Silverlight Web plug-in. Earlier this week at NAB in Las Vegas, Microsoft gave the first demonstration and the purple channel was there. Microsoft's Steve Sklepowich gave us a little preview. He describes it as a "DVD-like interactive experience." The implementation of Move and Silverlight will be announced soon, Steve said. I bet we'll see it on the Summer Olympics which will stream in the U.S. on MSN using Silverlight. Find out more about Move, please see our interview with Jim Ericson. Posted on Friday, April 25, 2008 www.beet.tv NBC Readies Online Olympics Coverage with Microsoft's Silverlight -- and Piracy Solutions are in Place Online viewers of the Summer Olympics, will need to download a small plug-in to their computers to watch some 2200 hours of live and on-demand video coverage from Beijing. The Web application is called Silverlight. It was introduced last year by Microsoft. To check it out, you might want to watch a baseball game this weekend on on MLB.com. For NBC and the International Olympic Committee, the issue of piracy of the online video coverage is of considerable concern, as Victoria Ho of ZDNet Asia reports today. She says that NBC is using fingerprint technology and is having discussions with "user generated sites such as YouTube" about using material from the Olympics. She reports that NBC will use DoubeClick to serve ads into the video streams. Microsoft has been taking steps to protect the security of content delivered in Silverlight. Earlier this month at the NAB convention in Las Vegas, the company announced a new digital rights management solution.
