8 Questions to ask a City Council about cell phone masts before they are erected.
I have eight questions for Dublin City Council regarding phone masts on top of Northside Swimming Pool.
As a former resident of Kilmore West, and someone whose family still lives in the area, I would also like to register my protest, in the strongest possible way, against the presence of approximately 50 mobile phone masts on top of the Northside Shopping Centre pool.
I believe their presence is an attack on the health of the men, women and children in the immediate and surrounding areas. A number of independent studies have linked increases in childhood leukaemia, breast cancer, brain tumours, Alzheimer's disease, neurological disorders, chronic fatigue, anxiety and depression to the radio frequency radiation generated by these devices.
Aside from the threat to people's health, I can see no technical or commercial justification for these masts. In light of this, I think the people of Coolock and the whole of Dublin have the right to know the answers to the following questions:
1. Exactly how many masts are on top of the Northside Swimming Pool?
2. Which companies do the masts belong to?
3. How long has each mast been on top of the building (ie the dates when each one was erected)?
4. What is their purpose?
5. What is the strength of signal coming from this building?
6. What consultation, if any, took place with the local community before these masts were erected?
7. What risk assessment was undertaken, and if so, what was the nature of it?
8. What payment have Dublin City Council received from each company for allowing the masts to be erected?

Cell Phone Tower Mast Fears

PLANS to allow a new mobile phone mast to be built near a Six Bells primary school have met with anger from concerned parents.
Blaenau Gwent Council confirmed mobile phone company Vodafone had submitted an application to build a new tower, between 10-15m high, on land adjacent to the Old Quarry in Cwm Farm Road, Six Bells, near Bryngwyn Primary.
A council spokeswoman said they were currently consulting Six Bells householders through site notices and letters to individual properties before making a decision.
The spokeswoman added: "As the proposed mast at Six Bells will be less than 15m in height, the council has, under current planning regulations, 56 days to make a decision on the acceptability of its siting and appearance, which it will do through its normal planning procedures."
Worried parents and residents have started a campaign to convince the planning committee to think twice about giving the tower the green light.
Nearly 200 people have put their signatures on a petition submitted to the council.
One of the residents spearheading the campaign is Catherine Edwards, of Bryn Gaer Terrace, Brynithel.
Mother-of-three Mrs Edwards, 35, said she was concerned about the tower's potential health risks.
She said: "Two of my children go to Bryngwyn Primary School and it's the health issues that are my main concern."
Mrs Edwards said she believed the tower would be too close to the school.
"I'm concerned about the welfare of my children and I believe that it is dangerous to women's health.
"I just think there must be a better place to put it. People don't want it here.
"It's a health risk and it would be an eyesore."

Many of us enjoy an occasional bedtime chat with a loved one who is far away. But as more and more people trade in their landlines for mobile phones, they may find that these late-night conversations are no longer a good idea. According to recent studies, cell phone signals can alter brain waves��and the consequences will keep you up at night.
Neuroscientist Rodney Croft and his col��leagues at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia strapped a Nokia 6110 cell phone to the heads of 120 men and women and then monitored their brain waves. When the re��search��ers switched on the phone without the subjects�� knowledge, they saw a sudden power boost in the volunteers�� alpha brain waves. Alpha waves normally surge as the mind shuts out the external world and spins internal thoughts. Croft believes the heightened alpha waves reflect the mind concentrating to overcome the electrical interference in brain circuits caused by the pulsed microwave radiation from cell phones.
In a different study, sleep researchers at Loughborough University in England found that after a 30-minute exposure to cell phone signals in talk mode, people took nearly twice as long to fall asleep as they did when the phone had been off or in standby mode. The scientists think the effect probably reflects the time it takes the brain to relax after being agitated by the phone��s electrical field.
James Horne, one of the study��s authors, cautions that the effects are harmless and less disruptive to sleep than half a cup of coffee. Still, he wonders, ��With different doses, durations or other devices, would there be greater effects?��
