In the process, Starbucks set a new Guinness World RecordsTM record for “Most Nations in an Online Sing Along.” On December 7th, Starbucks Coffee Company (Nasdaq: SBUX) invited the world to connect in an unprecedented event that united individuals, communities, nations and cultures through the universal language of music. Representatives from 124 countries around the world performed the legendary hit “All You Need is Love” in celebration of Starbucks one year anniversary in partnership with (RED)TM. The live sing-along spanned across multiple countries, languages and time zones, and featured artists playing instruments and singing in styles that are traditional to their homelands. The performances were simultaneously streamed over the Internet to a single location in London, which featured each location’s performance. v Leeds the way to smashing Guinness world record

, the National Young Volunteers Service, and hundreds of music fans set a new Guinness World Record today at the Leeds Festival. 430 people lined up to create the longest massage chain. The previous record stood at 260 people. v staged the world record attempt to illustrate how simple and easy it is to do others a favour – including giving a person a backrub. The World Record event is part of v’s Outdoor Favours campaign to show teens and young adults how fun and easy it is to do a favour for someone, no matter how big or small. The campaign has been touring the UK’s hottest festivals to help inspire the nation’s 16-25 year olds to spend some time volunteering.

Driven to Sustain - The Hutterites

We drove through the prairie fields of Southern Alberta (seeing Tyson’s first hare!) to eventually reach the gravel road leading to the Miltow Colony. We rolled up to the last row of houses that look much like military bunkhouses, got out of our van, and were greeted by Sam, the financial manager of the colony. We didn’t see anyone else yet but we were intrigued. Sam is a round-faced, gentle-looking man. He, and all the men as we were going to see, wore black coats, black pants, and black hats that add a few inches to their height. He beckoned us inside where we sat on a steel bench in a room with a desk, a couple of metal chairs, and a wooden clock on the wall. They offered us pork sausage and juice boxes that we accepted as two girls about our age entered the room. Michelle and Lorna were beautiful, smiling girls who, like all the other women, wore black and white polka dot headscarves, black coats, and striped skirts that went down to their black shoes. They all did their hair in a centre part with tight rolls away from their faces. Michelle was our main guide for our tour of the colony but we quickly discovered that everything happens in groups. Especially tours with outside people. In these days we saw, learned, and experienced so much. It is so interesting how self-sufficient they are. Michelle, and the troupe of girls that we accumulated, toured us through everything: the smoke house; the butchery/meat preparation building; the chicken, cow, and pig pens; the grade school which is taught by government teachers; the greenhouse; the kitchen; the church; the ‘lagoon’ where they capture the methane to power the pig buildings; the composter; the carpentry, blacksmith, and mechanic workshops. We were invited for dinner so we stayed and then we asked if we could stay overnight, in our van, in the heated mechanic shop, so that we could filter our oil faster in the morning. Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club – Episode #10

In this episode I visited Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club, the oldest surviving golf course in the world. The Course The Old Course at Musselburgh is a 9 hole, par 34 links golf course, located in the heart of Musselburgh, just miles 3 from Edinburgh and surrounded by Musselburgh Racecourse. The course was originally 7 holes, another hole was added in 1838 and then the full 9 holes came into play in 1870. I really enjoyed walking round the historic course taking a look at the layout and in particular I wanted to see the infamous 4th hole, “Mrs Foremans”. It’s named after the pub, Mrs Foreman’s Inn, which sits behind the 4th green and where in years gone by refreshments could be passed to golfers through a hatch in the wall of the pub adjacent to the green – the perfect halfway house! The history of Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club I met up with Robin McGregor, the Secretary of Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club, who told me about the history of the course and how it had come to pass that Musselburgh Links was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest golf course. Documentary evidence shows that golf was played on Musselburgh Links since 1450 and Mary, Queen of Scots even reputedly played there in 1567. However, there are no definitive records of this other than the one in 1672 when someone actually recorded play. Robin explained to me that the record comes from an Edinburgh accountant, called Sir John Fowles, who recorded in his account book on that date that he played at Musselburgh Old Course and lost the huge amount of £3 5/–. The Open This great historic golf course played host to six Open Championships between 1874 and 1889. It was one of the three original venues for The Open, the others being Prestwick and St Andrews. Not many people know that Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club has produced 5 Open champions, who managed to win the Open 11 times between them.
