Yup! It did the trick. Mac is so simple, I probably wouldn't have even needed this guide. But here it is.
He makes some good points to keep in mind. Like your iPod won't last long doing this. (Mine was getting really hot.) But you only need a few minutes to do the patch, so not much of a risk.
By the way, when you boot from the iPod, it'll automatically show your computer drives on the desktop. So you can just run the patch from wherever you have it stored.
I'm a 10.6 user and searched Google top to bottom for a solution, tried everything that sounded possible and nothing worked. Maybe they'll come up with something in the future, but for now, it ended up being much faster for me to just install 10.4 on a spare 4th Gen iPod, boot my MBP through it, and flash my drive that way.
I think his instructions are flawed even for 10.5. You would not want to reboot under a false version number. The .plist file should be restored BEFORE a reboot.
