The Medicare program has successfully offered health insurance coverage to all Americans over age 65, as well as many people with disabilities, for more than 40 years. While the health reform debate has focused on changes to the health insurance market to offer a choice of private and public health plans, and Medicare exemplifies a universal, public approach to coverage, Medicare nevertheless offers a number of key lessons for health reform.

According to a paper by Marilyn Moon, which will be released at the event, Medicare's successes and its shortcomings highlight promising directions and potential pitfalls for the nation's latest effort to control health care costs and provide affordable coverage for all.

Ken Gude discusses the hurdles that the Obama administration will face as it move along the process of closing Guantnamo by January 2010. How soon will it be before Guantanamo officially closes its doors? What will have to happen between now and then? And what hurdles should the Obama administration expect in closing the prison?<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/seeprogress/" >seeprogress</a></p>

Charles Darwin, and the legacy of his work describing evolution and natural selection, is often distorted for political ends. But as Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Susan Thistlethwaite explained yesterday, the spheres of science and religion are not in conflict, and a look at Darwin&rsquo;s own life can help untangle the thorny cultural history of evolution. &ldquo;Few people seem to remember that Darwin graduated from seminary,&rdquo; she said. Thistlethwaite spoke as a panelist at the Center yesterday, &ldquo;Evolution, Transcendence, and the Nature of Faith,&rdquo; which considered Darwin&rsquo;s legacy for both science and religion, and the impact of evolution on public policy.

She and was joined by Arthur Caplan, the Director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, David Sloan Wilson, the co-founder of the Evolution Institute and a professor of evolutionary biology at Binghamton University, with CAP Senior Fellow Rick Weiss moderating the discussion. Sally Steenland, a senior policy adviser to CAP&rsquo;s Faith and Progressive Policy Initiative, noted in her opening remarks that over half of the U.S. and British populations reject Darwin&rsquo;s theory of evolution, which has serious consequences for education global competitiveness.

Addressing the place of evolution in education, Caplan explained that religion and &ldquo;Intelligent Design&rdquo; do not belong in science classes. But he also said that progressives often carry the prohibition too far, implying that discussions of religion belong nowhere at all in public schools, a proposition he disagreed with.

Building on the fact that Darwin was a religious man early in life, Thistlethwaite explained that the naturalist arrived at agnosticism after watching one of his young children suffer and die. She stressed that it was this personal experience and not merely his scientific discoveries that changed his beli<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/seeprogress/" >seeprogress</a></p>

How quickly will we begin seeing the effects of the economic recovery and reinvestment package? How much does the stimulus invest in long-term, rather than short-term, growth? &ldquo; It is insane, and morally bankrupt, for a nation with this much wealth to allow [hunger] to continue,&rdquo; said Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center, at a Center for American Progress event Friday morning. At the event, CAP Policy Analyst Joy Moses led a panel discussion on the importance of a new U.S. commitment to end food insecurity and hunger for all Americans.

Panelist Joel Berg, executive director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger and author of All You Can Eat: How Hungry is America?, noted that in 2007, more than 36.2 million Americans either did not have enough food or feared they would not have enough at some point during the year. &ldquo;Hunger,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;should be on the same level as what people thought about cholera, malaria, and yellow fever. These have all been eradicated with the government&rsquo;s help.&rdquo; Berg added that with the aid of the federal government, hunger can be eradicated in a few short years.

Federal programs have already made progress. The establishment of food safety net programs, or federal aid and entitlement packages aimed at assisting in the purchase of food for hungry families, has helped to stem the prevalence of starving children that once filled the streets in the early 20th century.

Today&rsquo;s hunger problems require targeted assistance. &ldquo;Current food insecurity,&rdquo; Weill noted, &ldquo;is often a choice between food and rent, or between food and health care.&rdquo; As a result, policies focused on bolstering support for poor and working-class families will have the largest effect on hunger. Weill noted that hunger experts &ldquo;almost unanimously agree we need to boost food stamp programs. Dollar for dollar, they have the best value.&rdquo;

Congress has clearly taken note. The version of the recovery package recently passed by the House of R<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/seeprogress/" >seeprogress</a></p>

The coal industry has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to get out the message of &ldquo;clean coal,&rdquo; through front groups like the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, campaign contributions, and an army of lobbyists. But the devastating December 22, 2008 coal ash slurry spill of the Kingston Fossil Plant in rural Tennessee broke through the cacophony of clean coal carolers. This ThinkProgress Wonk Room video is a stark reminder that in reality, coal isn&rsquo;t clean.<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/seeprogress/" >seeprogress</a></p>

A provocative dicussion about the future of democracy in the post-Bush years. Michael Signer's debut book, Demagogue illuminates how humanity's urge for liberty can triumph over the dark forces that threaten our freedom. The demagogue is a dangerous byproduct of democracy, an authoritarian leader who owes his initial rise to the democratic support of the masses and who will go to almost any extreme to expand his power. This book describes not only these fascinating, often violent usurpers of freedom, from Cleon of Athens to Huey Long to Adolf Hitler, but also the heroes who have resisted them, from Aristophanes to Thomas Jefferson to Hannah Arendt.

Demagogue also unravels the mystery of how 21st century leaders have made such profound mistakes in Iraq and elsewhere, unleashing democracy's ancient enemy rather than securing a new democratic world. Signer presents a bold new theory of democracy and American power, "exemplarism," revealing a host of new, innovative measures that can undermine demagogues, strengthen democracy, and create a freer world.

In the end, Signer presciently reveals how America's historic victory over the demagogue at home can help a new generation of leaders rescue democracy across the world.

<a href="http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2009/01/china_human_rights.html">http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2009/01/china_human_rights.html</a>

The relationship between the United States and China may well be the most important bilateral relationship in the world. In recognition of that fact, the Center for American Progress is releasing a new report entitled, "Strategic Persistence: How the United States Can Help Improve Human Rights in China." The report provides both fundamental principles that should guide U.S. policymakers in their efforts to effect positive change in China's human rights practices and concrete recommendations to advance those efforts.

China remains responsible for profound violations of its people's civil and political rights. In its foreign policy, China has often backed repressive regimes around the world and watered down international sanctions against these regimes. None of this is in the United States' best interests. Given the high degree of economic interdependence between the United States and China, as well as China's growing military reach, American interests are best served by a stable China with a robust commitment to the rule of law&mdash;conditions that are undermined by a failure to respect human rights.

U.S. approaches to human rights in China have ranged from confrontation to passivity and have rarely reflected a coordinated strategy across government entities. The key to U.S. efforts to promote human rights in China is to take a coherent, pragmatic, non-ideological approach that goes beyond easy rhetoric, takes advantage of strategic openings, and recognizes the value of persistence. Ultimately, China must be persuaded that greater democracy and human rights are in its own best interests and are integral to its becoming the highly respected global leader it aspires to be.

ThinkProgress.org</a> provided readers an opportunity to ask John Podesta questions pertaining to his service on the Obama transition team. You responded with great enthusiasm, offering more than 100 comments and questions.

John sat down with TP on January 28, 2009 for about 20 minutes. In that period of time, we were able to get to 8 of your questions. The first one I asked him was the top-rated question, as voted on by the ThinkProgress community. It was submitted by user curtisteff, and it read: &ldquo; Why is President Obama giving up so much to try to appease the conservatives?&rdquo; Podesta offered this response:

I think that if you look at the [economic recovery] bill that&rsquo;s making its way through the House and then will be taken up by the Senate this week and voted on and put on the President&rsquo;s desk by President&rsquo;s Day, what you see in there is the thrust that he laid down early on &ndash; really back in December and in January.

I think he was willing to have a dialogue with Republicans. So far, that dialogue has been largely one in which it&rsquo;s good-natured but the Republicans don&rsquo;t seem to really want to come to the table and talk seriously about what needs to be done for the country. So be it &mdash; that&rsquo;s their choice. But I think he did want to change the tone in Washington. He wanted to talk to people across the political spectrum. He wanted to open up the government to people from all perspectives around the country. That&rsquo;s what WhiteHouse.gov is about. That&rsquo;s what the transition &mdash; change.gov &mdash; was about, to try to solicit ideas from across the political spectrum to meet the big challenges.

But I would not confuse that with an idea that he&rsquo;s compromising on his big goals of trying to deal with the very difficult economic circumstances we face and deal with the big challenges thi<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/seeprogress/" >seeprogress</a></p>

The Latino population is now so large, its trajectory of growth so rapid and its contrast in relative age to that of the general population so stark, that it will not be possible for the United States to advance without substantial, and so far unimagined, gains for the nation's Latino community. The Census Bureau's mid-range estimates for 2050 assert that the nation's Latino population will grow by 63 million people or a stunning 48% of total U.S. growth, and that Latinos will constitute 25% of the United States population in 2050.
Henry Cisneros and Arte Pblico Press of the University of Houston celebrate the launch of their new book, Latinos and the Nation's Future and take part in an engaging debate on what Latino growth means for our country, and what the next administration needs to do about it. Latinos and the Nation's Future is a landmark collection of essays by leading Latino figures such as Raul Yzaguirre, Lionel Sosa and Aida Alvarez, among others, about the most pressing issues facing Latinos today and how the future of the nation is inextricably linked to that of the Hispanic community.

Confronting the growing economic crisis will be the first order of business for the new Congress and the incoming Obama administration. Should the incoming administration work to deliberately increase the size of a federal deficit already projected by the Congressional Budget Office to exceed $1.2 trillion for the current year? How big should a stimulus package be? How should it be structured?

These are the questions that a Center for American Progress panel on fiscal stimulus will grapple with at an upcoming event. Part of the discussion will involve what the Labor Department's December employment report will tell us about the future course of the economy and the need for stimulus.

<a href="http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2009/01/stem_cells.html">http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2009/01/stem_cells.html</a>

The time has come for the U.S. to renew its promise of global life sciences leadership. With the ascendancy of the Obama administration and a more progressive Congress, the opportunity for renewal has never been greater. The United States must now stake its claim as the world leader in regenerative medicine, which is almost certain to become a vital component of cutting edge biomedical innovation in the 21st century. To ensure that the research in this newly emerging field of the life sciences is conducted responsibly and ethically, the federal government must reform its stem cell research policy and fund embryonic stem cell research in a manner that is robust and comprehensive as well as cautious and principled.

The greatest potential for regenerative medicine lies in the ability of scientists to tap into the process of cell differentiation and development. This can only be achieved by tracing the development of human cells from the very beginning. To do so, scientists need to conduct research on embryonic stem cells so that they can discover how these all-purpose &ldquo;pluripotent&rdquo; cells can change into any one of over two hundred different cell types in the human body. Indeed, this research will provide us with unprecedented insights into human development, how it can go wrong, and how it can be fixed&mdash;perhaps leading to 21st century medicine's biggest paradigm shift.
