TASTING NOTES:
I always set myself up for disappointment when I taste a new world Sangiovese wine. My anticipation is always high with hope that maybe this one would be the one Sangiovese that could stand up to its lofty bretheren from its birthplace in Tuscany. Through Italian immigrant waves from the late 19th century, California and its many regions have produced some laudable efforts over the years but the majority falls short. In this attempt, Del Dotto has produced a remarkable wine with a medium ruby color reminiscent of an aging fine Bordeaux with a complex nose of red cherries, smoke and spice. On the palate the wine has notes of jammy red fruit, tar, smoke and a subtle but pleasant floral hints intermixed with spice and leather. Although alcohol is just a bit high at 14%, the wine is well balanced with soft tannins, not too high acidity (Sangiovese is considered a high acidity varietal) and a long, subtle and elegant finish. A great effort.
