About This Video
2007 Root 1, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua Valley, Chile
I spotted this wine at a local Costco in San Diego stacked in beautiful wooden boxes. The presentation was certainly worthy of a $100 Bordeaux wine, however, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the price at $9.99 !! The bottle had a lot of information about the name, the summary of which is that the vines are from ungrafted original European root stock (pre phylloxera). Chile is blessed by the mighty Pacific to the West and the majestic Andes to the East, forming a protective cocoon on its vines and the wine from this bottle is the reward!
The wine has a medium ruby color with aromas exhibiting a rich and intriguing mix of dark fruit, leather, game and spice. On the palate the wine shows a balance and elegance commendable for such a young vintage. The smooth tannins serve a nice backdrop to the dark fruit with earthy notes and a hint of chocolate. Nice medium to long finish. A pleasurable and unique wine.
