i love how arbitrary the progression of difficulty is. knuckles' level takes under a minute, while silver's is a nightmarish monster.

I actually figured this out when I played this game. If the top of your character is touching some sort of surface, like a ceiling, and you move left or right at all, the camera will hop at absurd angles in that direction.

The bubbles open based on how much time has passed since the last eagle statue. That orange bubble doesn't take much time at all to open. It's affected, but you're only giving yourself a second of breathing room.
